Lychee pruning
« on: August 04, 2019, 06:26:57 AM »
I have a young Erdon Lee lychee, maybe 3’ tall which is flowering all over. Any suggestions as to how best to manage this? I want the tree to put its energy into growing, perhaps let it set fruit then pick off?

Yeah, probably best to let it set fruit and then cut them off. Lychee flowering is heavily influenced by average nightly low temperatures. I am unfamiliar with the climate in your area but if you prune off flower panicles on Lychees when it is still cold enough, the tree may re flower and expend even more energy on secondary blooms or mixed blooms.

Much appreciated Simon! Yeah still a few more cool nights to come Down Under, maybe down around 40 F so I will leave it for now.

Besides cold weather, pruning is key to lots of fruits. Prune after picking last fruit, and if you had no fruit prune like you did. That’s why some lychee trees seem like they have fruits every year.
Don’t rush, take time and enjoy life and food.
