could be Chayote maybe or strange papaya

funny, I thought that papaya grew out of the plant in the background

yes, looks like papaya if you have it in hand a scratch/sniff test should show typical papaya milkiness. I have a small percentage of papaya which have similar ridging, the stem looks like papaya.

It's a papaya that had a hard life.
