Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sapodilla question
« on: July 01, 2021, 09:59:14 PM »
I have a Sapodilla which was grafted but the graft died and a long shoot from the seedling rootstock came out about a year ago. I'm planning to wait to see if it flowers. Does it still take several years for the shoot to flower even if the rootstock has been in the ground for over 5 years? Thanks

I have been trying to graft a red guava on a white guava seedling rootstock but keeps failing. I was able to graft another white variety on it fine. I was then thinking the two colors are maybe not compatible or cannot be mixed. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Grafting techniques
« on: June 28, 2017, 09:34:21 PM »
Is there a special technique or trick needed to graft Mangos? I have tried cleft and side veneer and cannot get the grafts to take. Sometimes they push a little and die. I have been grafting fruit trees like Cherimoyas, guavas and stone fruit with good success but cannot get mango to take.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guava flavor or lack of
« on: March 26, 2017, 06:22:26 PM »
I have a Turnbull white guava that  last crop had no flavor at all. Very good size but what a waste of fruit. The previous year it was very good. I was wondering if this may be due to either over watering or not enough. What is the water requirement for Guavas. Is it like Mango that if you water too much it loses flavor? Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / White Sapote eating
« on: March 25, 2017, 03:47:13 PM »
Is it ok to eat the skin of a white sapote fruit? I have a Suebelle white sapote and the flesh is flavorful but hard to scoop with seeds seeds and soft skin. I end up eating parts of skin and flesh together. Skin does not have bitterness of other cultivars.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting Purple Mombin cutting
« on: August 16, 2015, 08:19:01 PM »
I was wondering if anyone had experience in rooting purple mombin cuttings and can explain the best process. I have seen videos for other plants and trees using rooting hormone and planting it in soil. Others show rooting in water first. Which method works best? Also can't see to find whether all or some rooting hormone are safe for edible plants as far as not being toxic.

Thanks

After reading a lot on this forum about the different mango flavors (spicy, mild, etc), I have to ask, how do Caribbean mangos differ in flavor to Florida mangos?

I am trying to find out how long does a custard apple seedling take to flower. I know that sugar apple seedling flowers within a year or two but was not sure about the custard.

Thanks

I purchased a Purple Mombin (spondias purpurea) a couple of months back as a stick in a container. It has put on a lot of growth since and wanted to know how hardy this tree is to cold. This way I can decide whether to leave it in the pot or plant it in the ground.

Thanks in advance

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for a good foliar fertilizer
« on: July 08, 2015, 11:58:59 PM »
I need some advise on a foliar fertilizer with micros for Chicos, Cherimoyas, Mangos, etc. Also is it safe to apply it when the trees are fruiting?

thanks

Are there any places where we can buy good quality Mangoes in Southern California? After looking at so many posts from Florida Mangos I can't help to feel a bit jealous. Every time I buy some at local supermarkets, all I get are those mediocre Tommys and such. Unfortunatelly, my Glenn tree is still small and most of the few fruits that it had have fallen or burn by the summer heat.

I need some ideas of what mulch to buy. I am trying to mulch several fruit trees like Sapodilla, Mango cherimoyas, etc. I have been to HD and Lowes in Los Angeles area already but I most of what I find are those color treated or decorative ones. I am looking for some organic stuff that would help preserve moisture but not those that will leach the color paint into the ground. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing Mamoncillo in California
« on: May 07, 2015, 10:06:58 AM »
Has anyone has success in growing and fruiting Mamoncillo (Spanish Lime) in California? I have seen a bush tree in Encinitas Arboretum but have not seen another one since. I understand that you need a female and male tree to fruit.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fruiting Longan question
« on: September 25, 2014, 09:57:27 PM »
How can I tell if my Longan fruits are ripe. I have a Kohala and the fruits right now are golden brown with green spots. Do I wait until they are all golden brown? I can never tell.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green Sapote seedling not flowering yet
« on: August 28, 2014, 11:52:56 PM »
My Green Sapote seedling is about 9 years old and not a single flower yet. I keep hearing it takes 8-12 years for a seedling to flower.  Is anyone experiencing this?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trip to Mimosa Nursery
« on: August 25, 2014, 07:32:48 PM »
I made a trip this weekend to Mimosa nursery in LA. Very nice selection of tropical fruit trees. Lots of Sapodillas, Atemoyas, Mangos, Litchis and so on. I also saw some Mamey and Green Sapotes. They had some trees on sale.  Picked up a small Sugar Apple seedling with flowers to see if it survives the winter in my yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona pollinating tool

I always hand pollinate my Atemoyas and Cherimoyas but I saw this toll on amazon and have seen it in videos from Chile and Peru. Does anyone have experience using one of this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / USDA plant hardiness zones
« on: August 03, 2014, 05:16:42 PM »
Is there a specific website to find my zone? I keep trying different sites and getting either 8b or 10a for Glendora, CA. Don't know what is correct.

Thanks
Raul
