Avocado Experts Please Analize This Day ?
« on: November 17, 2016, 04:54:56 PM »
Hello Folks;

I have a 15 Gal day from Zills , Harvested about 7 Fruit 2 Month ago .
The Foliage is nice and deep green , But I'm noticing that the leaves Are turning brownish on the under side and falling off.

Can't say I've seen this on my other Avocado trees , Other than a few leaves looking like that looks pretty Health .

Thanks Ed

I suspect too much salt from the Water supply in my area , I use the yard water spigot , I have ordered a Filter system for the yard spigot ..

But now I need to address this issue ..

Any recommendations?
Thanks Ed

Definitely no expert but as an observation.  Some of my cados are turning brown however not much leaf drop. I'm sure after fruiting so hard the small tree is a bit depleted of essential nutrients too.

Salts are a problem and so is chloride and floride.  Also you could be overwatering.  Hard to say whats wrong.  Do you use mulch?  Getting lots of rain lately?

Have the same symptoms on some of my 8 varieties and plenty of black branches even on a beautiful 10' Reed. Sent sticks off to the U. of Fl.  got back a great response, said it was cultural (I use rainwater almost exclusively) which makes things really tough to figure out.  My Gwen and Sharwil completely lost ALL their leaves but came back.  I also drenched with MagnaBon.  Here's a Oro Negro branch that looks like yours.  Tree is now very healthy and loaded.  Good luck!

Waiting on fruit to ripen so all is not lost.

We really need to know your cultural activities to guess what's going on.  What plant food and the NPK, etc. applied how often for instance?

Good luck!

I'm definitely NOT an expert but, according to my experience it might be  phytophtora root rot.
Just a clue: try to gently dig the first 2 inches of topsoil around the trunk and look for feeding roots.
An healthy tree should have hundreds of tiny white or cream colored healthy roots.
If they are brown or black or even worse absent then the suspicion would be strong....

For me, that was my first suspicion. Florida lab results were negative.  Then I suspected Avocado Black Streak.

From my experience avocados don't really like being in pots. When was the last time it was potted up? Root pruning pots are great. I would pull it out of the pot and take a look.

They thrive in ground with extra large mounds and heavy heavy mulch.

Exactly!
For me, heavy mulch with its own leaves had made a huge difference, the overall tree health has improved dramatically!

Leaf mulch is absolutely required.  I use a 4-6" mulch of leaves and pine needles as mulch on my pots.  There are hundreds of small white roots at the soil level.

Also, someone mentioned chlorides.....agree....they don't like any form of chlorides or flouride.  Reason why I asked about the plant food he's using.  AGAIN, any Muriate of Potassium in that stuff Ed?

Doesn't Day do well in pots? Is that just wishful thinking? Logees seems able to fruit it in a pot, not that it's typical in every case, but they would damage their reputation if it didn't work out in the majority of cases.

I'm anal, can only relate to NPK values and micros as it relates to tissue analysis.  Having said that here's the best bang for the buck and in general probably the best food for citrus and avocados. N is too high for mango. https://www.amazon.com/77900-Performance-Fertilizer-25-5-15-25-Pound/dp/B008JSIKCU/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_0_1

Suspect your tree is not receiving the proper nutrition.

Good luck!

I use 46-0-0 urea in 50lb bags for my trees.  Each tree gets a few fistfulls every few weeks during hot months.  And they get a few hundred pounds of course woody mulch every year from the tree trimming companies.  The trees literally grow 10ft a year.  But the trees are in the ground.  A potted avocado is probably a loosing battle long term.

Your native soil must be void of N like mine.  The only pots that might work long term for avocados is root pruning types.  You can get twice the root system efficiency in half the space with such a system.  Copper hydroxide latex painted pots work very well.

I'm active in a Texas Facebook rare fruit growing group of over 3,000 members and you'd be surprised how many plant Hass avocado seeds or some kind of seedling and don't consider the tree's future needs, size, etc.  :o
