Juanita Tangerine

I recently acquired a Juanita Tangerine and was curious to know a little more about the tree/fruit if anyone has one. I’ve heard the famous story of Ms. Juanita and was curious about the flavor of the fruit.

It's pretty much a Ponkan...

Hey, Kelly_GA8a, I should be able to tell you this fall, as my tree has many fruits this year. I could even send you some try if you want. It only had 3 fruit last year, but this year has dozens.

Again, it's a ponkan. Same flavor, firm flesh & open center.

Thanks Laaz - I remember hearing that now, though I’ve never tried one.
TFN, thank you for the offer! I would love to try one or two if you have them to spare! My tree is small and will take a few years to produce.

I agree with Laaz. Other than being a good tasting mandarin it is not really different than Ponkan. It was maybe a couple degrees or so more hardy than satsuma. I had mine grafted high on trifoliate and it did well until we had a severe prolonged freeze. It grew straight up and did not want to bush out. I think Juanita's original tree survived because it was planted right up next to her house.

But Juanita is said to having survived 0°F (-18°C). Once

It may have by coming back from the roots. My Juanita was very badly damaged in the Jan 2018 freeze we had here & we only dropped to 16F. Juanita is a seedling tree & will come back true from the roots.

Laaz, my Juanita was planted spring of 2017 and survived 14 degrees it's first winter (covered with frost cloth) on a few occasions. Last year it only got down to 24 degrees. It is over 8 feet tall now. It was one of the few trees with no damage at all.
Kelly_GA8a, I should have plenty to share if nothing bad happens. Now if my feeble old mind doesn't forget.

Mine is over 20 ft & like a bean pole. I also got the budwood from Stan & grafted it to trifoliata. It is at least 12 years old. Exact same growth habit as ponkan. This was the first time it was ever damaged & was the first time it was ever covered with ice & then snow for almost a week...
