Join up at the forum sharetheseeds.me for entheogenic species. The place isn't as active as it once was but many of the senior members still hang out there. It's worth contributing to the site and building a reputation then more people will be willing to open up to you.

Cuttings are extremely hard to root for that species. I'd go for seeds. There are some online vendors that carry it. The ones out of country might not be able to get the seeds to you unfortunately unless you ask about covert methods. Try World Seed Supply here in the states first. Might have to personal message him if they aren't listed being a restricted species.

Cuttings dont take easily but it is easy to seperate suckers and those grow very well.
Seeds can work but the germ rates are not great and its very slow growing from seed.
Mine flower and seed every year and I have never had a self sown pop up Maybe I will try collect and plant seeds this year and see what the viability is when fresh.

Hi Everyone,
I am new here and wonder if there are other rare seed suppliers that can ship to Thailand. I'm helping a botanical garden in Chiang Mai to find some seeds and already checked the recommendations here and they don't have what I need available  :-\  I'll appreciate any leads
Best wishes,
Tania

Hi Tania,

Welcome!
I think it depends alot on what exactly you are looking for.

What might also work is posting a WTB(Want to Buy) post in this subforum and list everything you are looking for.

Hope that helps!

I have had firm persimmon that were very sweet and pleasant though.
Is this type only good to eat once very soft?

Looking really good!
I have been very interested in this plant for awhile but not much info out there on it. Thank you for the pics I am loving the time incremental documentation 😁

My plant has easily survived some frost. The worst I've had is defoliation.

I definitely want to put in the ground but I'm renting 😔

A friend has some cuttings from me in the ground a year now. I should ask for an update from him😁

I see. The cactus will have to bide its time in the pot then. :)   Wait...did you say you gave your friend a *cutting*??  So your little cactus grew an arm already?

Unfortunately no branching yet. I took a cut off a single column it grew again from a shoot off the base I cut from.

Thanks for the pics! Those are absolutely awesome! Are you thinking about putting at least one in the ground to see how fast it will grow? I just got a bunch of small seedlings and can't wait to put them in the ground at some point after growing them out in containers with lots of sun and fertilizer. :)

Mine are also from Nullzero.
Did absolutely fine down to zero but go this beautiful purple colour on the new growth (no damage though). My area gauteng South Africa is also very dry in winter which I'm sure helps.

Thanks for sharing! How big are yours and do you have a picture, too? There is so little data on this species from outside Mexico, it's really strange. It should be a popular cactus in places like California, South Africa, parts of Australia, Mediterranean countires etc, but for some reason it's still extremely rare, and to my knowledge there are no mature specimen outside of Mexico.

They looking a bit thirsty in these pics. They get very nice and plump in late spring and summer😁

What potasium salt are you using? KCl?
I think cheaper and safer source of potassiim is the wood ash.
Just make a small fire with clean wood ,collect the ash and you can add a little to the tree.

I would worry using KCl I much prefer to use potassium nitrate if I need soluble K just obviously be aware it adds N.

Iv often wanted to do the ash and coal thing but always worried it will make the soil super alkaline? Do you know if that is true?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Selling Marula seeds

Do you know where he got the seeds? I'm wondering if trees from a cooler area might have more cold tolerance. Thanks, D

the seeds from what I understand were collected from different areas he visited, so there is definitely gonna be some variation in the fruit quality and potentially hardiness. I read someone on here who lives in South Africa I think mentioned his marula plants were able to withstand 1 degrees celsius while still young, I would search marula on here to confirm though.

Iv had year old seedlings survive at least down to 0C (protected from frost though)
The most important thing is that the plants are in a dormant state when it's that cold imo. They are surprisingly hardy

Hello all!

I like wierd exotic stuff that is out of the ordinary. After doing lots of research I've stumbled upon many odd ball species but it seems you can always find more with enough diligence. I'm here to ask the community of knowledgeable fruit people what wierd zone 8 hardy fruits have you come to know? Trying to gather a list of all things that may grow well here in the Florida panhandle where some years may hit 15°F. Want stuff that can handle here without winter help or very limited help. Open to anything really from perennial herbs, veggies, useful non fruit baring edible/medicinal trees/bushes, to fruit baring species. Obviously I'm a fruit guy too so that's the main interest but all is welcome here if it's useful and will grow well. In other relevant info the soil I have is thick and clay like. Not great drainage but manageable. Willing to adjust planting sites for species that need good drainage though. I do have areas of my land that can remain soggy and hold water for days at the least too so any plants that can handle flooding on occasion but then drying out potentially for periods too are much needed. Let me please hear your wealth of suggestions!

Thanks! DG

Please give us the list you have amassed so far!

How is this used?

Is the fruit also edible?
I heard you can use it like a stimulant also??

Thx for the recomandations.I looked on silver hill page and il send them an email to ask if they have Dalbergia Armata and Euclea Pseudebenus also.
Sunshine seeds doesnt have dalbergia armata and euclea pseudebenus in stock  and the ebay link with diospyros Lycioides i know it from 2 years ago.

Silver hill is constantly changing but now after the tragedy I dunno if the diversity will be the same😢
Rachel and her husband collected many of the seeds themselves and had knowledge that will no forever be lost....

That being said diospyros Lycioides is fairly common and they should have it.

May I ask what about these specific species caught your interest. I have tasted Lycioides for example and it was really nothing too special 😅 like I have one and I would get of someone was offering and didn't have but not sure I would seek them out first as SA has some better choices imo to look for first😉

These still available?

Fruitlovers.com do not reply to customers willing to buy seeds! Second he is a thief! He doubles the price of seeds which cost half less yesterday! I do not recommand him as a potential buyer. Fruitlovers.com is a thief
Only had good experiences with Fruitlovers!

There is different prices for us international folks so maybe you got confused with that?

Would love to see pics of your plant!

I've been playing with an aeroponic propergator with limited success but I'm thinking being winter it needs a water heater? A weird seethru slime seems to be the main problem.
Katuk and bastard oleaster the only success so far

20
Stuart, your list is impressive. You own or have access to all of these seeds?
Unfortunately not I only got obsessed with edible plants like 5/6 years ago. Most of the more interesting stuff are seeds I imported band are yet to fruit but then I was still living with my parents and had much more disposable income, now I am married with a baby on the way so I hope trading can help fuel my addiction ha ha.
I havnt updated that list in a long while though so I'm sure a couple things have died and not been removed or not been added!

Seeds I can get are mostly indigenous to South Africa, stuff I can get in the wild or through friends/contacts

Mike, this link should pretty much answer your query.

Hi
How many seeds you have to germinate to get male and female trees and in what age can you distinguish male and famale? Thank you
Msk unfortunately I can't verify that info as all I know about it you can read in the thread for yourself:) I have heard from other sources that the ratio favours more females but again that's not first hand knowledge of mine.

My oldest tree is 5 years old and hasn't flowered but. I have overwatered, damaged roots when repotting and stunted it alot before I learnt more about good pot culture ha ha.. it has put on more growth in the past year years than all four years before.

They don't grow naturally in my area as it's only gotten warmer here in the past 20 years or so, we can grow lots of stuff we never could before. It's hasn't blinked at the temps here light frost in winter and up to 35C in summer but could have grown much faster in the lowveld climate I am sure. I can't give much more info than that as I only really encounter wild trees. Usually if land is cleared they leave this tree cause of the fruits but more extensive cultivation than that I havnt seen. Farmers here are very western produce orientated and there is little interest in indigenous fruits sadly. This plant is mainly known for a very tasty cream liqueur called amarula. I'm not sure if the producers farm those trees or not.

They grow starting like 100km north of me in beyond in starting in what is known as the lowveld (I live in the highveld with a much higher altitude bringing colder weather)
The wild ones though makes so many fruits without fertiliser they carpet the floor. I can't wait to see what some thinning and fertiliser will do! I want to grow very many when I get land and select for the best of fruits:)
I also know that one male can pollinate many females, my future plans are to experiment with grafting a male branch on. I also have younger plants I grew two or three in the same pot then braided the stems, hopefully the trunks will mesh and the odds are in favour of one being female.

A cool thing about the seeds is one seed often sprouts two plants but I assume they would then be the same gender so those I separated.

Marula
http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Sclerocarya+birrea
I don't think the above taste description gives this fruit justice. I really like it and the tree grows easily taking some cold(if dormant). Very heavy producers in the wild without added fertiliser and fairly drought tolerant. These seeds are from wild plants and about one year old. I have germinated many many Marula without any treatment like scarification and germination of year old seeds is far superior to fresh and I think they can stay viable a very long time but if your germ rates are bad I would be happy to resend in feb when I get fruits again:)
My plants have been happy in large pots but grow a bit slower than in ground. Male and female tree needed but nut really a fruit I would love to spread around cause as wild fruits go it's a gem:)
I have plenty seeds:)

Mongongo nut
http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Schinziophyton+rautanenii
I have never tasted it as the seeds were to precious to eat but it was a staple among the koi San people and was featured in lost crops of Africa book. Not super easy to germinate in my experience and scarification is needed (wild fruits go through an elephants belly) male and female needed. It is drought tolerant too. I don't have as much experience with this as Marula and people I sent a different batch to a while back seemed to have better germ rates than me ha ha!
I don't have any seeds but if you are very interested I can possibly get more.

I want to trade for interesting tasty or cool fruits/nuts that will grow in my area. I get some frost but things like avo, dragon fruit, black sapote, jaboticaba, wax jambu, cherrimoya, pitangatuba, Lucuma, citrus, cedar bay cherry etc grow fine.

I'm really looking to trade preferably as post is expensive here but if you want to buy we could make a plan and I will just buy on headwinds or something lol.

I also don't mind if you will only send in a few months I can get Marula seeds all the time and mongongo I can get they are just pricey as a contact has to get them for me:)

Maybe Marklee s tree is infausta? It's hard to tell from pics the two species are distinct from eachother in person. Madagascarensis is not velvety like infausta :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Help: wax apple won’t flower
« on: July 07, 2018, 03:45:13 AM »
You may have a seedling or you may be trimming off the new growth where the buds form on wax jambus.
Do buds form on current year growth or last year's growth?

I pinch of new growth on mine because it's every leggy, maybe that is inhibiting flowering :'(
Also a seedling. Do seedlings only usually flower when huge?

Yes, the fruit forms on the ends of the springs new growth. I'm not sure how long a seedling takes to fruit. I've only had airlayers.
Thanks Mark! :)
