It's cold like hell around Mockingbird/Markham area in Riverside, but there's no frost. The low was about 34F and windy. Hope there's no damage to our young trees.

I am in a similar situation like you. Just planted a bunch of atemoya, Valencia Pride mango, jackfruit, etc., after moving to Southern California. Looks like there's a frost/freezing advisory for Riverside area. The temperature is expected to drop to 31F for Monday's and Tuesday's night. Hope nothing will happen to those young plants. Will report back later.

Hello everyone,

Can you fruit soursop, star apple, ilama, and santol in container? I just saw a YouTube's video of this one player growing these fruit trees in container. I am curious if these can fruit. His trees are pretty big and tall. He's from Orange County, CA.
On another video, he said that sapodilla require hand pollination. Is that true? Thanks.

My favorite mangoes are the Guimaras mangoes from Philippines. I also like the Indian mango for green consumption.  Best when eaten raw dipped with fermented shrimp paste, this mango grows anywhere most particularly popular in the suburbs.

I forgot to ask for my father in-law to bring some seeds over from the Philippines when he came for a visit.

What's up, playboy!

The green star apple variety is from/called Lo Ren, a southwest region of Vietnam. The Lo Ren green variety does seem to be bigger than the regular green or purple.

Does anyone know what variety the Green Star Apples are that have been showing up from Vietnam in California?  Internet possibilely gave me an answer, but not even sure its a variety name.

If I were you,  I'd not be eating star apples from Vietnam.  Some one just shared a video of maggots or parasites found inside the star apples from Vietnam on Facebook. H/she bought it from Little Saigon's. The video posted on California Tropical Fruit Growers.

Supermarkets in the GCC region are selling a type of hybridized sugar apples called "Lebanon custard apple." I have tried eating both the Indian sugar apple and the Lebanon custard apple and comparing the textures and favors of each.  The Lebanon is gigantic, chewy, and sweet, but less gritty. The Indian sugar apple is  chewy and sweet, but more gritty.

What kind of custard apples is the Lebanon? I have given some seeds to couple of members here. Hopefully, those playas can germinate and grow them into full fruit producing trees. Coastal Lebanon is very similar to Southern California. It survives there, it'd not have a problem in Florida or Southern California.

True Indian mangoes are round and small. I have seen and eaten a lot of them in the Philippines. They are good when eaten green.

He's just a 9-5 guy from Orange County, CA. My cousin even told me about people stealing fruits and stuff from the front yards. I was like who'd want to do that. I thought she's messing with me until it happened to this guy.

I have a friend who is from Fountain Valley,  CA. He lost a big plumeria tree to thieves. Some Asian mofo drove by his house and chopped the whole tree down. Yea, that happened.

This avocado is pretty good but it has a lot of sandy like kidney stones in the meat. I have never seen anything like this. Is there such a thing?

Here's the comparison between the sugar apple and Lebanon custard apple. The Lebanon is massive comparing to na da sugar apple. That fruit is just a medium sized one.

I will try to bring some Lebanon custard apple seeds home. I will give these seeds out for free if anyone wants it. First I have to make it out of two custom agencies though.

I was able to break fruit into two halves and eat it as peeled. It's pricey about $13/kilo or $6.50/lbs. I also saw Nam Doc Mai mangoes. Looks good, but couldn't justify the high price. I am in the Gulf (Arabian Peninsula) region. All tropical fruits are expensive like hell here.


Here's a good information on the Lebanon custard apple. Looks like a mutant Annona Squamosa. It grows on coastal
Lebanon.

Greengrocer’s stalls are filled with these custard apples, called ashta in Lebanon and grown locally in coastal areas. Best to buy them still firm and let them ripen at home; their flesh will yield to gentle pressure and the fruit is the sweetest and creamiest you have ever tasted. Maybe that is why they are called ashta here,  the Arabic word for cream.

Paederia is very easy to grow and spread like wild fire especially when it gets a lot of watering and chicken pooh. Vietnamese people use it as raw fish wrap dipped with sauce, salad, egg omelet, or blood sausage stuffing. Any leaves can be eaten- young and old. The leaves will stain your tongue black for many many day.  Health benefit is unknown, but Paederia is a natural stool softoner- good for constipation. Paederia is an acquired taste kinda like durian.

Don't buy it from Ebay. It's expensive. Just ask them Asians here. I am sure they will hook you up with one or two plants.



Can anyone share info on paederia lanuginose (la mo long)?

Belive it or not, it  actually tastes like regular sugar apple and somewhat chewy. The meat comes in cluster with seeds. Mine weighs about a pound. Bigger one weighs about a kilo or more.

I bought this custard apple from Carrefour over here. The label says it's a Lebanon custard apple. This thing is big, bigger than a normal sugar apple. It's as big as an atemoya. Flavor and seeds are like similar to na da sugar apple. I am collecting its seeds. Thanks.

I used to be in the agribusiness. If you can find a big local farm supplier and distributor, buy your materials from them. It is a lot cheaper than Farmtek and other online suppliers. Before we sold our farm and moved to West, we hoarded and brought with us a ton of  materials used for building greenhouses, etc.

Pulleys, motors, industrial space heater, thermostats, drop curtains, fans, misting nozzles, etc.

Try Georgia Poultry - Nacogdoches, TX. Georgia Poultry - Pittsburg, TX. Just say you're a farmer and open a farm plan and shop.

Awesome Lory!  You're a brave soul. I have been to the Philippines a thousand times, but I always steer clear of Mindanao or Davao.

Anyway, the fruits look delicioso. My favorite fruit is the singuelas (Harpephyllum Caffrum). Be safe.

I think we're hitting 37F in Riverside tonight. That's not too bad.
