Tropical Fruit Discussion / GRafting mango sun or not sun??
« on: June 12, 2013, 10:21:58 AM »
I will graft in few days new varieties of mango. I would ask the ones who have training in mango grafting if it is better after grafting to let the trees in direct sunshine or to put them in a shady place? (I have to precise that the scions will travel for some days before arriving)!

Thank you all, Jonas

I would like to know what experience you have with mango scions sent by post. How long they have traveled and what about the quality at arrival. Also how they were packaged (in plastic, wet paper, parafilm,...)?

Finally, do you think they can travel, packaged in parafilm, during 8-12 days?

In Greece, on the island of Chios (only  there) we grow this tree: Pistacia lentiscus var.chia which give one of the most rare resins, the mastiXa. Which is well known for its medicinal properties, but mostly as an aromatic gum used to perfume firstly MastiXa Xiou (a mix with resins and sugar), but also ice cream, shewing gum, liqueur.

http://www.gummastic.gr/index.php?contentid=73&langflag=_en

Its trade is highly controled by authorities and it is totally prohibited to get and export from Chios island plants, scions, seeds,....

« on: April 06, 2013, 01:49:14 PM »
I bought today 6 Alphonso & 2 mango from Ghana (I don't know the name, the fruit is small (litle bit bigger as an Alphonso, round, ever green when it is rippen and yellow fiberless inside).

So, my questions are:

- when they do selection for new varieties, how many seedling do they do before to get a new variety?
- does someone tried seedling and get after fruits from its tree? what about the quality?
