Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passionfruit juice?
« on: August 11, 2018, 06:05:36 PM »
How do you guys juice it?  Is there some kind of tool besides a blender and strainer?  I got a ton of these and am sick of the seeds.

Then I read something that said the seeds can cause appendicitus!  Now I really dont want to consume them..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Watermelon
« on: August 08, 2018, 06:19:07 PM »
I never really cared for watermelons until growing my own.  They are so tastey and refeshing.  Everyone should grow them.  They are easy to grow and fast.

Picked this beauty today.  23lb "desert king" watermelon.  We already picked a few and they are excellent.

"85 days. This watermelon produces 20-lb fruits that have a light pea-green rind that is resistant to sunburning. It is also one of the most drought-resistant varieties of watermelon known. It has sweet, yellow flesh and is very popular in the watermelon-growing areas of Arkansas. Good for storage."

Had the bottle of vodka leftover from thanksgiving a few years ago out in the garage fridge.  I think its a sign to mix the 2.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado grafting
« on: July 12, 2018, 04:13:08 PM »
I got some hard to get scions from a member here.  Thanks for those.  Ive got 20 or so seedlings Im going to graft tonight.  I am a novice at this and dont want to screw it up.  I usually get 1/3 to 1/2 takes.  Would like to ensure success of at least one of each of the 5 cultivars I got scions of.  So I have a few questions for the experts.

1.) Best gfraft type for seedlings?  Cleft or?  Scions are pencil size.

2.) Leave some leaf sets below the graft or leave none?

3.) Best place to put the trees after grafting?  Greenhouse with 50% shade and 90F temps.  Outside in the shade also around 90+F.  Or in the garage which stays in the 70s and 80s and I have a dimmable grow lamp I can put on them.  Since its mid summer Im not sure where the best place to set them after grafting.

Any other advice?  I really want to get at least 1 of each type to take so I can get trees growing here.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Industrial garden hoses
« on: June 15, 2018, 11:21:21 PM »
You guys who have been through lots of garden hoses, do you have a favorite?  Anyone with big farm or grow outfit have leads on the idustrial hoses?

I have 10 apex industrial hoses.  The red no kink hose material is good but they started putting aluminum ends on them and now they get stuck to brass outlets.  Need to find some new hoses asap.  Something stout enough I can leave the water on all the time and not worry of bursting and has to be brass hardware.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya questions
« on: May 21, 2018, 05:44:29 PM »
Ive got 3 solo plants started in 5 gal pots from seeds out of grocery store fruit. I have a few questions to make sure they do ok after moving to the ground.

1.) Do I need all 3?  I really only want to grow one but know they may need a male and female to produce?  Should I plant 1, 2, or 3?

2.) Spacing of the plants?  10ft?  They are going on a hillside in fullsun, I expect them to get big.

3.) Ammending?  Cow manure, chicken manure ok?  Top dress with mulch, what else?

4.) Wind, its windy here.  Not much I can do about it.  Can give them a little shelter but they will be getting some wind.  Is it a deal breaker?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rainbow Eucalyptus
« on: May 08, 2018, 08:41:14 PM »
Anyone growing it in CA?  I have a lot of extra RO waste water I'm looking to water something with.  Will it grow here?  Maybe the air is too dry?  Other eucalyptus does quite well (invasive).

Any other suggestions what I can grow with really hard waste water?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Stone fruits?
« on: March 27, 2018, 07:29:58 PM »
Hows it looking?  I have most trees doing nothing yet.  A couple starting to flower.  And this florida prince peach is almost ripe!  3 or 4 more weeks to go before they are in season.

I put in about about 30 stone fruit trees in the last 2 years.  Im starting to think that may have been a big mistake with the weather we had this winter. May have to switch to mangos.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hoop house
« on: November 21, 2017, 04:36:53 PM »
Anyone made one of these?  I am making one and have a few questions for those with experience using 6mil UV poly on a greenhouse type structure.  Specifically I am trying to determine the best method of attaching the poly to the end rails and also trying to decide if the galvanized hoops need to be painted white to reduce heat?  Also do the perlin clamps need something on them to keep the poly from rubbing on them or just go ahead and lay it right on top of the hoops and perlin clamps?
