Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Loquat relatives

There are around 21 different species in the Eriobotrya family. At least five species are grown for their fruit, but there seems to be hardly any information out there on any Eriobotrya fruits except for Loquats. Maybe someone has more information about it or experience growing other Eriobotryas.

Pomegranates should work for you if you go for a cold-hardy and early riping variety since normal ones wouldnt ripe in time.

If you have a sheltered spot, Feijoa could work for you as well - maybe giving it some light protection (fleece) during winter months. Mine seems to be alive after this winter in zone 7a.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Diospyros texana
« on: April 03, 2018, 07:16:08 AM »
Hello everyone,

I‘m looking for Diospyros texana plants or seeds - I didn‘t have any luck growing from seeds last year. Preferably looking for european sellers to reduce shipping costs.

Thanks

I've been growing one since last year. Had to dig it up in autumn - if it survives the cold storing, I'm going to plant it outside again in spring and will try to overwinter it outside.

I doubt that it will survive here in southern Austria, since we have temperatures below freezing for most of the nights since November/December.  It is supposed to be less hardy than Musa Basjoo and Musa Sikkimensis, but it probably does well in regions with a milder winter and a shorter freezing period.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Prunus brigantina (alpine apricot)
« on: November 15, 2017, 06:58:37 AM »
Hello, has anyone grown Prunus brigantina (Briançon apricot/marmot plum/alpine aprico)? It's the only apricot-like wild species native to Europe.
Is it worth growing it? What does it taste like? Is there much difference to a regular apricot tree (especially taste-wise)? Where to get seeds of it?

Would love to hear if someone has experience growing this tree.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Myrica rubra in Europe
« on: October 30, 2017, 05:19:55 AM »
Does anyone know european sources for Myrica rubra (Yumberry) plants. Grafted plants of some chinese cultivars would be of special interest; didnt find any sellers so far.

Bonus: are there any cultivars which are more frost tolerant than  others?
