Usirius, do you know which one of all those 899-cultivars you have. They are very differnt. I have 4 of them, but non has fruits resembling Poncirus. All fruits are smooth and shiny.

Ilya, you said Keraji ist growing slowly, but mine, high crafted on Poncirus, are the fastest growing plants of all my citri.
I am talking about the in-ground plants in the green house. It is their second year and they have a dense crown of 60cm. Of cause they have been cropped for  round shape. There are four of them -all the same.

as Ilya has made clear Yuzu -referring to DNA analysis- is no hybrid of ichang papeda. It seems to be a cross of some (probably lost) ichangensis-relative and sour mandarin.

Radoslav, do you own all these varieties of sour Japanese citrus? Could you please drop a word about taste?  :-*

for me this story is a little bit confusing: citrus leaves that smell from cabbage to basil and mint? Are you in a sommelier-class and just practizing?

Ilya, 899A is much worse. The question is: is there a chance to get better results if I craft on another rootstock? Slower growing or faster growing? I could use FD or some Citrumelo.

300 years of good practice.
For potting soil horse manure is composted for two years. And I suppose USA nurseries don't use composted Beech-foliage either. Old Europeans have been growing Citrus for at least 2000 years. But you Americans do everything better, know everythig better and you decide what's good taste and which is not. This sometimes is a little bit annoying.

Millet, Bomand, your opinion. You are US-Americans. That obviously makes a difference. And you don't know much About Japan or Europe, I guess. Have a look at https://nielsrodin.com/?lang=en

Manure is pretty strong stuff and full of various salts. Well composted manure is good for seed beds but I would not use for soil or fertilize. I have used well composted manure tea...water well if you use it.
horse manure has Always been used as Citrus fertilizer. For hundreds of years. And composted horse manure is one component of the Citrus-soil that is used for the Citrus-collection of Schönbrunn Castle in Vienna.

Brian if you haven't tried one yet, you haven't missed much.

Millions of people in the world love Yuzu taste and in Europe it becomes more and more an issue for haut cuisine aswell.

I might have asked it already... is your plant in open ground or in a pot?
Thank you!

Mine is in pot.

I have 899J in open ground, unprotected since 2004.
It is now more than 3 m tall, but has not fruited yet.
It was a rather shy grower, twig damage was evident after -12C, and recovery next season was very limited, but main trunk was never damaged and this plant survived a winter with -16C and two weeks of frozen soil.

Ilya, is yours grafted on PT? It seems that 899A and 899J are not really compatible with PT. 899A has a sharp shoulder where scion meets rootstock. With 899J it is a bit less obvious. Same effect can be seen with Kumquat on PT.

Millet, it is quite clear what this fruit is -exept of one striking point. Bernhard got some fruits from a Hybrid Poncirus X Changsha when he visited Riverside or another USDA-Citrus -site. The Citrandarin 899 obviously produces zygotic seeds. Back home Bernhard planted the seeds of his 899-fruits. As open pollinated, he did not know -and nobody knew- what the F2 parents could have been. He named the seedllings 899A to... R(?) and tested their cold hardiness. Some of them survived. I own 899A, 899F, 899K? and 899J. Allof them have already flowered and I got some fruits. J was the last. Fruit of A tasted nice and was sweet. It is strictly  monofoliate. the others have trifoliate leaves and taste nasty. That is the story.

not available in Europe, I suppose  :-X

That's why I thought of C. ichangensis IVIA. My IVIA has dark purple flush. But it is marked YuzuXCitrumelo
Your new hybrids are very impressive. It is one of these that carries flowers?

98
and what about the colour of the flush of your 5StarXYuzu seedlings? Purple or green?

Usirius, no, Bernhard has been a little bit out of Citrus in the last years. He has lost most of hir plants after a storm had damaged his greenhouse. I have spent some time with him last summer and last weekend I met him in Vienna at the "Wiener Zitrustage". I wonder what 899-variety you have. The rather hairy fruits look strange to me. I have 4 899-F2-hybrids but only with 2 of them I am sure about the correct marking. I have (for sure) 899A and 899J and (quite sure) 899F and (don't know) 899E or H. All are blooming. 899A has sweet, mandarin-like fruits. 899J did not bear fruits yet and the fruits of the rest are not edible.
899A is monofoliate, 899J aswell, F and H Show trifoliate leaves, but very few with the years.

You are right. I was misleaded by the dark purple colour of thje flush which reminded me strongly of my C. ichangensis IVIA. Same colour but trifoliate leaves. But it is CitrumeloXYuzu. Do you have it? Do you want it  ;) ?
