My customer, that is a nursery, ships from south Florida to Texas plants that they buy from other nurseries every day.  There is a form for that.  I wrote the program that generates the list of plants and nursery that they were brokered from for all orders on the truck.  It prints on the numbered, preprinted form from Florida Dept of Ag.  It is called a "CONSOLIDATION DECLARATION FOR FLORIDA NURSERY STOCK DESTINED TO TEXAS OR LOUISIANA".  It states, "This is to certify that the nursery stock material in this shipment has been examined within the past year and found to be apparently free of the burrowing nematode and meets the requirements for Texas Quarantine 4TAC, Chapter P., Diaprepes root weevil."

Don't know how it works in FL, but here the nematode certificate is only for the nursery to which it was issued, can't ship plants with that certificate unless you are that nursery. Makes sense because once out of that nursery's hands who is to say if the plants are properly protected from nematodes?

That is awesome!!!  I can already taste the BG x Tabouey jackfruit dipped in dark chocolate.

I had a tree at my old house.  I used to eat them when they got some yellow about 1/4 to 1/2, not soft.  I think some people like them more ripe though.  Soon you will have enough fruit to experiment with the stage of ripeness that you enjoy most.

Great spread!  I still have never tasted a greenie.   Bender's Grove has them for sale so I am going there tomorrow so I can resolve this deficiency.

I am planting everything about 15 ft apart, a few things closer.  I will probably regret it in 10 years for being too close or to far away or something.  ;D

How far apart are your plantings on the lychee/longans? They are going to be great when they fill out more.

I am not sure why my longans and lychee are flowering so small.  It is probably just a numbers game.  I am planting so much stuff at the same time, I get to see the extremes in flowering and growth rates.  Or someone snuck on my property in the middle of the night and sprayed my trees with potassium chloride.  My guess is my soil is terrible and the trees are not getting any nitrogen or other nutrients from the soil.

Looking great Brandon. I love the fragrance of blooming fruit trees.  Surprised at the flowering lychee of that size.  No lychee blooms here, looks like another empty lychee season in my yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Precocious tree pics - Flowers in February
« on: February 28, 2014, 08:39:28 PM »
I took a walk out in the yard and got intoxicated by the fragrance of all the trees flowering.  Thought I would take some pictures to share.  All of these trees, except the mangos at the end, have only been in the ground for 6 to 16 months.  Enjoy!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees at Costco
« on: February 28, 2014, 02:20:46 PM »
Big box stores are all about efficiency in everything.  This means dealing with as few vendors as possible.  One of my customers is a large nursery in south FL.  They ship to Lowes in many states through out the south, including TX and maybe further.  FL to TX is over a thousand miles, not really local.

Don't HD and Costco source the plants from local nurseries and supporting them this way ?

How would you like it if your only choice in mango trees was Tommy Atkins, Haden, or Glenn?   Big box stores only carry the two or three options, best known, of anything.  I can go to Bender's Grove and he has a ridiculous number of mango varieties on site and has good access to any he does not have in inventory. Do you want the big store buyer choosing for you?

Anybody here would argue that we should not be buying diapers from Walmart because it drives local suppliers our of business ?  I doubt.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Mango Blooms of 2013-2014 Season

I have never used it but here is a name, Serenade Garden Disease Control Biofungicide

http://www.groworganic.com/serenade-garden-disease-control-biofungicide-32-oz-concentrate.html

It is labeled for both anthracnose and powdery mildew.

Have you posted about these beneficial bacteria and fungi, Sheehan?    Want to name names?

I'm so anxious to have fruit this year that I'll even consider non-dangerous options.  My LZ has real blooms, so I'll try just about anything.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Nam Doc Mai fruit splitting?
« on: February 22, 2014, 07:25:12 AM »
Which is worse, splitting fruit or no fruit?  My parents planted a NDM tree in the early 90s and did not see a flower for 8 - 9 years.  NDM#4 is supposed to grow out of splitting fruit, right?  I would be happy not growing it as there are plenty of mangos I enjoy more but it is my wife's favorite.

I feel bad for recommending this tree over the "regular" NDM in the past. Due to the splitting issue, I think the regular NDM may be better suited to south fl :-/.

A foliar copper spray may be made one time per month on 'Mauritius' lychee to control anthracnose. Anthracnose is generally not a major problem on other lychee varieties or during dry weather conditions

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pale Leaf Mystery
« on: February 16, 2014, 08:06:38 PM »
Problem seems to be on old leaves.  Old leaf symptoms are caused by deficency in nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, and potasium.  Annona squamosa looks like magnesium because of yellowing of edges.  Citrus looks like nitrogen because of yellowing of the veins. Abiu looks like a combination of things, maybe magnesium and potasium from the browning, necrotic spots.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango trees in ballistic bloom!
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:55:33 AM »
Ballistic is the best way to describe my 3 mature mango trees, glenn, haden, and keitt.  Every tip has a 2 - 8 inch panicle.  For trees planted in the last year since moving in, rapoza, st maui, southern blush are also ballistic. Pickering, angie have light bloom.  I have about 5 other trees that are too early to tell but have been dormant since October.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone using Copper?
« on: February 11, 2014, 12:07:12 PM »
A couple sprays of copper a year will not hurt.  As Har (Guanbanas) has pointed out, copper is an essential micronutrient that will eventually be deficient if not replenished.  However, it is probably a better idea to vary/rotate treatments for each spraying.  Neem oil and Plant Doctor, available at home depot or lowes, are two more options labeled for the treatement of anthracnose.

Some of my jackfruit are growing straight up.  They can also be pruned and grown in hedgerows 6-8 feet apart.

I have not tasted Cepeda either but I bought a tree from Bender's Grove.  I have Akil Especial and Lorito too. I have tasted Lorito and I thought it was excellent.

« on: January 29, 2014, 10:52:39 AM »
I have the same situation.  I have two in the ground.  The one from PIN is keeping them all and one I got from Patrick, which was from seeds from FruitLovers, dropped them all and already has new growth popping from almost every node.

968
Yes, but maybe not all of their vendors are paid on standard X number of days payment terms.  In 2004, a nursery that sold annuals to HD was a customer of mine and I heard rumblings of pay-by-scan, payment based on when a customer bought.  They were bought by a company in California and they ended up closing the business and selling the land to residential developers. During spring, standard terms are to HDs advantange since product moves quickly.

969
I am 99% sure HD is not buying from Zills but another wholesale nursery that is probably buying some from Zills.  These big retailers want to receive product from as few vendors as possible.  I believe they may even be willing to pay a tiny bit extra for the select vendors to broker plants they do not grow to this end.  They would rather receive a single tractor trailer load of plants then receive fifteen box trucks in a day.  Fruit trees represent a tiny portion of what they sell from the garden center and would not be enough to justify a fruit tree dedicated vendor.

HD does not pay sales tax on anything they resell.

I was gonna wait until March but...

Those collecting tax may be ignorant of the laws or think it is better to just collect the tax for everything they sell. I have been told by my customers, if audited by the state and they find a violation, they typically examine a small period, like a month, in detail, find the violations for the small period, and multiple by the entire audit period, multiple years.  I have been asked before to provide this detailed information on behalf of my customers.

« on: January 23, 2014, 09:29:15 PM »
My vote for the last spot is rapoza.  My young tree is flowering and setting fruit like a champ.   I tasted it at F&S park and it was great.  Not sure how far west you are but if you get the rains like we get in Southwest Ranches, it can take it.

Otherwise, from your list, Dupuis I have tasted and thought was exceptional. Dot was the best mango I ate last year but I hear it requires spraying and not a great producer.   Last year, Graham at F&S park was really off flavored in a bad way.  I have not tasted  Gary.  I believe Gary does not do well in wet areas.
