Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Silica to improve mango branch strength?
« on: October 31, 2021, 12:32:23 PM »
The best way to keep your mangos from drooping is through pruning.  Remove horizontal growing branches.  Cut back lanky branches so the wood can lignify.  Remove excessive flower panicles.  Thin new branch shoots to 2 or 3 per new branch site.  Use less nitrogen and let the tree grow slower so it has time to harden off each summer and fall before flowering again.

The ones I tasted are not like cherries.

Maybe you can grow the low chill cherry tree instead?  Cherries are early season stone fruit so they should be done before AZ heat really sets in.

I didnt mention la verne guavas.

These are your guavas frank.  Thats why your name was brought up.  The guavas are nice but they are still just guavas.  So many pwople were asking me for cuttings, trees, seeds etc of these guavas that were so hyped up it got really annoying.

Looks like the new postage thing on paypal works but theres no email notifications that go out to the customer now.  They are getting there, one step at a time...  You would think they would have it all working before rolling it out.

I have 5 or 6 differwnt ones but desertyni and parfianka are the best ones.  Eversweet, ariana, wonderful all have the harder seeds.

Heres an atemoya and cherimoya grafted back in April Carlos.  If you pinch off the terminal growth it will force brqnches wherever you strip leaves.  The branches will only grow where leave are removed.  The petioles cover the new bud site.

Here you can see how the tips have been pinched andnspecific leaves removed where I want branches to grow in the outward direction.

Parfianka and desertyni are the ones with softest seeds.

I would cut that off right about 2f high and strip the top few leaves to get some branches going.  Its not too late to prune, ive been tipping new cherimoya and atemoyas all summer and still doing them now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can a fresh mulch pile self ignite?
« on: October 17, 2021, 05:07:11 PM »
I didnt see that its not close to me but thats a green waste center with huge piles like you are saying.  My point is only thats is very difficult for the average homeowner to get a truckload of mulch to ignite.  The recycling places have those giant piles and are moving it around with big machinery and keeping it well turned and its all inoculated with the right microbes etc to be able to get that hot.

My neighbor has a horse boarding ranch with over 100 horses.  They take out big rig loads of horse crap every week.  Many years ago he let his piles get too large and one of them caught on fire.

I tried really hard to get some piles to get that hot.  I really wanted to see how hot it could go.  If it caught fire I would have been happy, it just wasnt happening no matter how hard i tried to make it happen.

Its a monster!

I had a shade on it most of summer and just ditched the shade a few weeks ago since it seems like the worst of it is over.  Although it was 0% RH and 92F and super windy here a few days ago and it took pretty well.

I put a few chicken turds on it today and will start fertilizing more in spring, it should take off next year.

Heres the latest on my biqi.  It started to flush then got hit with a dry wind the other day it looks like a few soft leaves curled up abut otherwise seems ok.  Just growing slowly.  Havent done anything to it since planting it.

Surely this would be happening at least occasionally if it were really a problem yet Ive never heard of a mulch pile catching fire around here.  Theres mulch piles all over town that the tree trimmers leave out at parks and schools.  Wildfires are a real problem here yet ive never heard of one starting because of a mulch pile.  We have single digit humidity and crazy winds that would surely exacerbate the problem if it existed,

When I first moved in to this house we started using a LOT of mulch and experimented with composting.  I actually tried to get mulch piles to get hotter and speed up the decomposition process.  I have a long thermometer that gets inserted into compost heaps.  I used to put perferated septic pipes into the mulch piles to draw air into the center of the piles.  Also experimwnted with adding 50lb bags of 46-0-0 urea mixed into the piles.  I would add grass clippings, horse manure, urea, hosed the piles to keep the humidity correct so they would cook as fast as possible.  Never did the temperature get close to catching fire.

In the end I decided making big compost piles was not worthwhile and have since shifted to burying scrap material or chipping in place etc and not composting anything.  Even our chicken manure we dont bother composting.  I use everything fresh and let it decay in place.  Never had any fires start.

Im not saying its impossible but seems the problem is overstated for single truckload of green waste.

Hi Will, I dont have the messenger, it needs a facebook account I think.  I deleted my facebook account.

I have the nishikawa tree but it doesnt grow that well.  its grow OK but no flowers ever.  Maybe this spring it will flower, but I would say that ine is not very promising.  The fujikawa has already flowered and set a bunch of fruit for 2 seasons while most of the others are not doing much.  The ones with west indian genes dont seem to do as well here.  the fujikawa appears to be pure guatemalan.  the tree looks just like nabal.  Grows super well and sets tons of fruit.

Is your yangmai still alive rob?  Mine started to do its first flush in the ground.  It has not grown much at all but its starting to. Then we got a fire wind yesterday that probably cooked the new flush.

Ill try it.  Its annoying that paypal ruined their shipping interface.  It worked fine.

i should have never mentioned i had these.  that was my mistake.  it wouldnt have been a big deal if any individual here had asked me about the trees but tons of people were bugging me about the trees.  it got to the point of absurdity.  they are just pink guavas, not that special.  frank hyped it to the point of almost hysteria surrounding these stupid guavas.

younguys should ask frank for cuttings.

you can print postage from usps.com but the way it ised to work from paypal made things really easy.  of course they had to take a good thing and break it.

no more international shipping for me until that gets fixed.  had to stand in line and fill out forms in person the other day to ship somwthing overseas.  not doing that anymore.

Because they were so overhyped everyone on this board was sending me messages asking for seeds and cuttings.  The trees were ljke a curse, people wouldnt leave me alone about them.  So I chainsawed them down and chilped them.  Had to get rid of the curse.

Guys I chopped these trees down and ran them through my chipper.   I dont have seeds or scions.  Sorry!
