Citrus General Discussion / Re: Does my citrus have HLB?
« on: March 21, 2019, 07:50:59 PM »
Thanks guys for the help and info.

Poofy I don’t know the history of the tree since it was planted way before I moved in. All I know is it’s a lemon tree. I am assuming Meyer but thats a guess. I have been spraying it regularly with neem oil and fertilizing it regularly with Espoma citrus fertilizer. It responded a little to that but not like the other citrus trees. Thank you so much for the link to Agrosecurity Hawaii. Several sites online state that HLB is in Hawaii but hawaii ag said we have ACP but no HLB   :)

Lebmung thanks for the info on iodine testing. I will try that later today. Hawaii ag will test my trees too just Incase. I’m hoping my poor little tree is just nutrient deprived rather than diseased. At least I can fix that.

Citrus General Discussion / Does my citrus have HLB?
« on: March 19, 2019, 06:25:24 PM »
When we moved into our new place there were many preexisting citrus trees several of which were not in good shape. One tree in particular hasn’t improved since we started taking care of it. A friend recently told me it might be huanglongbing which I knew little about and was unaware exists in Hawaii. If it is infected with HLB I will be getting rid of it immediately but I want a second opinion before doing so. What do you guys think? Also if it is HLB how quickly does it spread?

Thanks guys! As long as it’s manageable to keep at 8 feet I’m happy 😃

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is little cado/wurtz truly a dwarf tree?
« on: March 16, 2019, 06:27:20 PM »
Our local nursery claims that little cado/wurtz should grow to about 8-10 feet. Is little cado/wurtz truly a dwarf?

Wow nice! You planted the two seeds in ground in direct sun? How tall is your tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why won’t my miracle berry produce fruit?
« on: September 04, 2018, 03:28:21 PM »
My miracle berry tree is in bloom but for some reason it won’t produce fruit. I tried giving the tree a little shake her and there to help pollinate but so far it has only produced 3 fruits. The flowers keep falling off. Any suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Wax Jambu anyone?

I love this fruit but my husband like many forum members find it to be a boring fruit. I think it’s totaly under appreciated for its delicate flavor. It’s mild and delicate in taste but has a great crisp texture, nice juiciness and sweetness that is very refreshing and enjoyable especially when chilled. I know they were popular in Taiwan at one point. Black pearl was a biggy there. I use to eat about 10 per sitting multiply times a day when in Taiwan.  I have a red variety from Frankies Nursery but forgot the name. I Just attempted to graft a green variety to it from a Thai neighbor. Still waiting to see if grafts will take.

Oscar, Happy to hear that you, your family and farm are not affected by the lava. How old is your sweet tart?

“Frank” (your avatar and screen name are hilarious) hope the rains subside. Do sweet tart have descent diseases resistance to your knowledge? Please let me know how your first crop tastes :)

37
How old are your trees and is this the first year they are producing?

I hope Oscar and all you guys near the flow area are safe and your property untouched 🙏 sad to see such devestation in Kauai with the floods and now you guys on Big Island 😢

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Kosrae green tangerines
« on: April 26, 2018, 05:31:48 AM »
Thanks Citrange and Millet! I didn’t know that citrus in the tropics remain that green. In Hawaii they don’t turn as yellow/orange as they do in the mainland but They never are that green

Sadly he never came across a single seed nor has his friends for that matter. But if it is a fairly common tangerine then there is no point in me trying to hunt it down.

Thanks again!

Citrus General Discussion / Kosrae green tangerines
« on: April 23, 2018, 04:48:34 AM »
My husband use to fly through the island of kosrae regularly and would rave about their green, seedless,  sweet, easy to peel, tangerines. Sadly he was not allowed to bring any back home due to Hawaii’s agriculture regulations. He no longer flies to kosrae and really wants to find out what kind of tangerines grow there and how to get a tree if even possible. Does anyone know the name of the local green kosrae tangerines?

So my father has suffered from insomnia for a very long time and was very skeptical about the passion fruit leaf tea. He often had to take tranquilizers to help him go to sleep and stay asleep. He is a retired doctor and does not believe in homeopathic and herbal medicine. That being said, we made him try the tea. 3 fresh leaves steeped for 15 minutes and drank an hour before bed. It worked so well for him that now he will not go to bed without drinking it. He has been drinking it every night for almost 2 month and swears by it. So thanks Karenrei and everyone else for the very helpful post :)

Home Depot sells Long Beach Peach trees. They claim it can produce in Hawaii even though it states 200 chill hours. So I was wondering if anyone has successfully grown peaches in Hawaii? More specifically lowland Hawaii or on Oahu.

Dang it! I just threw out a bunch of sugar apple and cherimoya seeds cause I read that floaters are no good! Glad I saw this!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any drawback to Maha chanok?

That is possible. Fortunately I live in Hawaii so cold tolerance isn’t a concern for me, but slow growth is. I am not known for my patience  :o

I don’t think they are pushing any in particular, but the lady at Frankie’s did suggested himayuddin and Rapoza. All I know is that the few nirseries I talk to try to dissuade me from buying Maha Chanok and suggest alternate Thai mangoes. One tried selling me a chok anon instead which I though was only an ok tasting mango

aloha mango carries Maha Chanok but the owner also tried to dissuade me from getting it. He called it a “bland flavored mango”. I wonder if they just don’t produce well in Hawaii

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is my Isan Indigo sugar apple a runt?
« on: March 06, 2018, 05:36:09 AM »
Not sure what triggers it, time, temperature or maybe day length but sugar apples have a dormancy which stops growth during winter.
No matter what you do they stop. As spring progresses they will awaken and start growing again. Be aware they won't be using much water while dormant so best to leave them on the dry side lest they rot.

Does this dormancy stage apply to places that do not have a true winter like Hawaii?
