Variegated Pineapple
« on: October 12, 2015, 10:51:46 AM »
My new pineapple plant's from Just Fruits and Exotics. I ordered them by phone and went to pick up from the nursery later. I didn't expect them to be that big. Wow, what a nice surprise.  :)  Anyway, I wanted to show you guys these beautiful plants. They look different than the other variegated pineapples I have in my collection. That's exciting.

Not trying to burst you bubble but I sure hope those are not the ornamental ones.  They sure look like it.

I saw the fruit there at the nursery and they said it's edible so I will report next year. They have a picture of the fruit on the website.

i have one of theirs that i got a couple years ago.  i had hoped it might blossom and fruit this year, but no such luck.  i have it planted in ground in my greenhouse.  it doesn't get full sun, and that may be causing it to be slow.  it's a huge plant, maybe next year.

this was last year.

i have a sucker from it that i potted up separately.

this one is getting full sun - at least until it gets taken in ahead of the first frost in a few weeks.  i'll have more to report in spring - summer '16

Thank you treefrog for sharing the pictures. The plant itself looks very nice. I put my young pineapple plants in garage for overwintering and the older ones for a couple of weeks in spring till they start flowering. Will do the same with these too. Fingers crossed.  :) We'll see what we get.

I will try and keep positive but from the picture on their website, it looks identical to what most refer to as an ornamental pineapple.  I am not say you COULDNT eat it but you sure wouldnt want to after taking the first bite.  I sure hope I am wrong.

Huh??

a) please re-read your prior two posts on this thread.

b) open the dictionary and read the definition of "redundant."

Mayber YOU need to read, since you want to be an a$$.  My original post was based on Galka's pictures.  Galka said the picture of the fruit can be seen on their website which I had not looked at (read my second post carefully and you will see that I stated, "from the picture on their website"), which showed the fruit in addition to the plant.

Before you make another senseless attack/accusation, I also said I am not certain and I hope I am wrong.  I have however had/have experience with the ornamenatl version, so I was stating my concerns to a fellow forum member.  I really couldnt care less if you didnt like my post...

I hear you.  :) I really don't mind it to be ornamental for that price I paid. Of course, I'd like to enjoy the fruit too. I hope next year I'll be able to say which one from my variegated collection is edible and which one is ornamental. The fruit I saw was big almost the same size as normal pineapple but I didn't see it cut opened so I can't say anything about its taste or how it looks like inside. Although I could smell the fragrance.
