Proper size container for purple mangosteen ?
« on: December 26, 2016, 01:37:48 AM »
Hello, I was thinking about using a 55 gallon water barrel to plant a Purple Mangosteen in because I've heard about their taproot and I was wondering if it seems like a good idea? Has anyone had success growing them in a container? If so what size ?

I'm very disappointed that no one can answer my question, for someone whose very determined to grow this fruit tree.

Step trees up one size pot at a time. This will just rot in all that soil and have circling roots at the bottom of the pot. Eliminate the taproot if it is a concern to you.

Thank you, I was planning on planting it in the water barrel when it reaches a reasonable size. I was just wondering if the water barrel would be a good container for it in the long term ?

The taproot will be contorted at that point. I highly recommend root pruning containers.

I like jackpot fabric pots. They make a lot of different sizes and outperform the ones that they sell locally (smartpots) per University of FL. You can by them wholesale at http://www.betterroots.com/sizesorder.html

I've heard that fabric containers deteriorate over time and are not good for long term use

I have zero issues with breakdown. The material is very thick
