Recommendations for Post Irma Top-working?
« on: October 13, 2017, 09:06:16 AM »
Hey All,

My Dad and I began the process of top working three mature trees by my parents house.
Two Kents (one in front one on the side), and one Chocanan (backyard).

For the trees in the side and back I'm planning on putting Beverly and Lil Gem.

For the big Kent in front I'm still undecided.
I'm thinking, Delores, Nancy, Zill or Van Dyke.
As you can probably tell, I'm going more for production and general ease instead of flavor.
As long as they are in the same ballpark as a Kent in terms of flavor and season I'll be happy.

Varieties that are already on the property are: VP, Buxton Spice, Malika, Juliette, Rosigold, Rosa, Cac and a lot more seedlings that I will eventually top work.

What do you guys think? I haven't tasted Delores, Nancy, Zill or Van Dyke. yet

I don't know about each types growth habit, but why don't you multigraft?

If it was at my house I would.
At my parents house the more vigorous variety would win.

If you've had Haden then you've had Van dyke.

Zill has more of a pineapple note to it, matures earlier.

Delores and Nancy are too new to make any definitive statements about their production. Zill and Van Dyke are At least partially MBBS resistant whereas I'm not sure yet if Nancy and Delores are. Being that they contain Brooks genes I'm a little wary.

What would you recommend. I'd like something like an improved Kent. Nice old fashion Florida flavor mango.

Have you had Marlys? That would qualify.

What issues did you have with Kent?

Flavor-wise I think it is at least as good as some of the proposed alternatives.

My Kent, grown in eastern Tamarac, was very productive. (Granted, that was twenty years ago.)

I'm surprised to see Alex recommend Marlys. The few I have had were bad tasting.

Don't have anything against Kent. If figured since the we had to cut back the tree severely might as well too work it.
I figured there had to be a more disease resistant productive variety now.
Kent is a few decades old.

I remember the Eldon mangoes at Alex's place were pretty good.
As for Zill varieties I also remember thinking sunrise was great.
However the texture was kind of soft.
I have until March to decide so i have some time still

Yes has a very horrendous off taste if not eaten at proper ripeness which is why.. I personally wouldn't rush to get it & I'm giving it one more chance next season but even so every palate is different, hope to get your opinion on how it tastes to you

Had some from my tree this year and the flavor was similar to Kent. Definitely not a 'bad' mango in my opinion but it won't excite anyone looking for something "different" from classic mango flavor.

Kent is a disaster with MBBS and rot, and probably should no longer be planted.  The people with Kent trees in Manalapan/Hypoluxo (where the infestation likely originally started) now lose all their Kent fruit to these diseases. I lost almost the entire crop off one Kent tree this year and part of another

When Zill is allowed to go overripe it becomes musky and nasty as described. This happens to mangos like Dot and Baileys Marvel as well, among others. It's a mango that should be ripened off the tree. When done this way it has a nice pleasant flavor.

I really don't understand any of your choices except the Beverly, which I think is a good mango. Delores, Nancy, and Lil Gem are all new and unproven as a dooryard tree. Who knows about production with these? Or even disease resistance? If you want a nice old flavored mango which is late, go with Keitt too- it's decent flavor and quite productive. Bombay is one of my faves and is very productive, at least for me. I'm inland with high humidity. My Kent is suffering badly...
Zill or Van Dyke???? With all the new varieties that Zill has released, do you not like your parents or something? :) Some of your options are the renowned sweet tart and lemon zest, which have proven their productivity. Cotton Candy, Phoenix, fruit punch and Venus would also be good options.
Pickering is always productive and well liked. Another option for your situation would be fairchild, especially for the front yard, or the peach cobbler...
All of these I think would be much better options for giving your parents a nice mango tree with decent production and good flavor.
I'm multigrafting a tree at my parent's house. I added bombay, carrie, keitt and lemon zest to a Haden tree.

I think that Alex and other commercial growers will be our sentinels as we learn how increased disease pressures affect various cultivars.

Have you considered Maha?  Not at all a traditional Florida mango, but I remember Alex saying that it has good disease resistance.

And finally, speaking of context, there was mango to be had last night at the tasting table of the Palm Beach Rare Fruit Council and it tasted marvelous to me, after having been mango-deficient these past weeks.  Guessing it was Keitt.    :)  :D  8)
