Rooting acerola?
« on: December 13, 2017, 08:14:10 PM »
Is it possible to root acerola?  I was clipping deadwood from my acerola this evening and (in addition to making myself itchy all over!) noticed that I'd accidentally clipped a few live branches as well.  I've got them in water right now. If it's possible to root them, what's the preferred method?  Sitting in regularly changed water?  Dipped in rooting hormone and put in moist soil?

Acerola is most commonly grown from cuttings.  It takes longer than most to produce roots.  You need to continually mist or enclose in plastic bags to avoid drying out in my experience.  Air layering works too.

They root from cutting very easily here.  They root even in full sun and just watered daily.

I have rooted Acerola several times and I agree with Peter it took a long time
to develop roots. I cut the bottom out of a 2 liter plastic bottle and cover the cutting and
place cutting in damp potting mix. The 2 liter I leave the lid on to maximize humidity,
After the cutting roots then you can remove lid to let the cutting acclimate to less
humidity and eventually remove the bottle. It seems like it takes around 3 months
or more. I have one I planted in my yard last year that I rooted and it had some fruit
this year.

Thanks - great to hear!  Should I prune off most / all of the leaves first, or leave them on?

I'll get them in wet soil and bagged!

I leave 1 or 2 leaves on.

I rooted mine without any extra help. Just put tiny cuttings in a water near the window, changing the water regularly.

Do you remember how long it took to root?

A month or so. Maybe less than a month. I don't remember, sorry. The cuttings were sitting in water looking happy with leaves and even started to flower.
