Waiting for Broadleaf Papaya to ripen.
« on: December 23, 2017, 03:11:38 AM »

I have been waiting for my broadleaf papaya fruit to ripen for months so I can pass on seeds to those people who requested them.It is just starting to show some yellow. One Texan in particular has been waiting patiently. This is a pure bisex specimen with red veins in the leaves, large sweet red fleshed fruit and very hark purple petioles.

If you have any extra I'd love to buy some. I lost the one I had in the hurricane & these are hard to find?

I am very interested,  Mike. This one is beautiful. I had two and both of them were all green. Would like to have this one with purple petioles. The sweet fruit is a bonus.  :)

Hi Mike , I just cut mine down to 1.70 meter tall , the birds were getting all the fruit ( not the one with red in leaves ) I did manage to save one fruit and let it ripen inside the house , was surprised by the ' good ' taste .

Yes it is an abiu behind and the fruit was picked today even though mostly green. It is a bit over 7lbs.

No a 7lb papaya. The one in the picture. The fruit on that abiu tree rarely get over 900g or 2lbs.

They are firmer, thicker and have redder flesh than regular red fleshed papaya and they keep for longer without rotting as well. This one was chopped a bit early so not as red as it could have been.

Great looking fruit.  I'm glad the critters didn't get it.  I now have to pick mine off the plant as soon as they show any yellow because if I don't the rats will come by at night and start nibbling the ends of the fruit.

I had to pick it early as flying foxes are partial to them.I had a rifle bird messing one up and each kind of fruit seems to bring different birds, mammal and insects. The taste was very good rather like a firmer solo. The flesh is thicker and denser than regular papaya.
