Green house / hoop house
« on: February 04, 2018, 08:23:00 PM »
Can anyone point me in the right direction or put me in contact with someone that is growing dooryard citrus in Florida to protect from greening?

I am planting a new grove of mango and lychee and have decided to not plant the 50 citrus trees that I had planned on ...... I just think it will be to discouraging.

I really would like to have 10 or 12 trees just for juice and have heard that it can be done in a way to prevent the disease

Thanks for your help

The best way to prevent greening would be buy guaranteed disease free plants and put them in a screened enclosure that would keep all insects out. That’s the only way I know of if you are in an area that’s susceptible to greening. The insect is very small. There are varieties unknown to me that are thought to be resistant to greening at this time. Good luck ! Tom

Thanks ...... that's what I was trying to figure out.  I.E. What. Screen size keeps the bad pests out and what other precautions are needed like doors and such

Has anyone ever seen any info on that?

j-grow, I just did a quick look-up on the Florida Extension website (search C.U.P.S. - Citrus under Protective Screening). They are recommending a 40-50 mesh screening for the insect barrier. I believe there is also a U-tube video on CUPS, on a commercial level, where they enclosed multiple acre fields, and were also using mesh of that size.
If you can eat it, GROW IT!!
