will loquat survive if cut in half ?
« on: April 26, 2018, 11:29:49 AM »
I have 2 loquat trees that are getting too tall in my container gardening. I would like to cut it in half to make it 1/2 the height but this will also remove the whole canopy. Does anyone have experience in doing this and will it survive ? Thanks.

I do have an experience with 5 feet tall seedlings. This way they will branch out. When my other seedlings where 2 - 3 year old and 7 feet tall I had to cut them in a half to graft some named varieties. They are fine, in containers two.

Thanks for the reply. I have more confident chopping them down to about 3 ft now :)

you were able to just cut off the top and re-pot it? no need for airlaying? hmm...maybe i should try the same.

spaugh Thanks, plants are amazing.  :D
arc310 No, this is a seedling that was too tall and I cut the top of it to make it shorter and to force it to branch out.

I bought a 3-4 ft loquat whip a few weeks ago and cut it down to 18 inches so it would branch out. As of now, it is beginning to make new buds. My understanding is they can handle severe pruning and be totally fine.  ;)
