Anjili may come from the western ghats but it isn't really a wild jackfruit. They are more like a small fruited (8cm) keladang (15cm fruit) with softer flesh and not quite as sweet.
Earlier this year when I come back from Asia, here in US I have Indian grocery store, just 200 meters (yards) away from my house. I know owner is from Kerala. I'm in very good friendly relationship with him. So I asked about hirsutus. He immediately called it Anjili, he said fruit is very sweet (hmmm...Mike T). He knows because he grows one in his own back yard! Don't have to go far for seeds
He told me it fruits in July and August. I asked for a bunch of seeds from him, and he confirmed with relatives just few weeks ago that my order will be available in July this year. Now confusing part is fruiting season. Roy-Ind and Sanitarium had different seasons from their sources and now my hirsutus will come much later. Looks like there might be different strains of ar. hirsutus with different seasons
I spend some time trekking and living on a Western Ghats farm. I know fruiting is very seasonal, so timing is that much more confusing..
