Where to buy durio species seeds?
« on: March 11, 2013, 04:55:16 AM »
Hi there!

I wanted to ask, is there any truely reliable and well-tried source for durio sp. seeds? I saw there are some threads going on in the trading section, but I am affraid they are not active.
I collect and grow durio species and I want to have as much of them as possible. I came to collect just Durio Z. cultivars so far, as it is very hard to get some other ones since you don't live somewhere in the durian countries.
Any information would be great, thanks!

Jim West at Guaycuyacu in Ecuador now offers D. kutenjensis.  I have generally had good luck with Jim.

Thats his website. But he sent out an email saying he was shutting down his website in the next couple weeks and only selling to people that had bought from him the past. So you might want to hurry.

I've thought of selling them myself, but durian seeds are a real pain in the _____.
1) viability is very short, and must be kept moist
2) they start sprouting very fast
3) sprout is very delicate and breaks easily
4) hard to clean
5) smell can be strong and picked up by ag dogs at airports
6) fruits are very expensive to buy
7) good cultivars often have all aborted seeds, or very very few seeds
All that combined makes it very hard for most vendors, unless they happen to own a durian farm. Maybe when my durians start to kick into production it will be plausible?
BTW i really doubt seeds from Ecuador would last trip to Europe. You would be better off trying to get seeds from Thai, Malaysian, or Indonesian eBay vendors.

You are right, it is hard to export them through mail. And I know Ecuador is a long way to go to Europe, but it is worth the try.
Well I did tried to get seeds from Ebay, but since I came to a few topics here on forum about a particular Ebay seller, I became very upset. I had a big order of durian seeds from him and I am currently working on to recall it. I don't know what is your personal experience. I have none, but since I read all these threads, I just didn't even want to try.

There are a few eBay sellers that are reputable. Maybe some of the other forum members can recommend some to you?

It would be great to hear recommendation. To be honest, I don't know what to think when I hear so much rumours and speculations about this seller and that seller. I think I am going to make a thread on a particular ebay seller and I would like to know everyone's experience.
