Hi all,

these are the new cultivars in my collection. The were planted last November. Interesting is, that I have some cvs not much known and not cultivated in FL or CA (as far as I know), like Mabroka, Mulgoba and Gouveia. I have not tasted the fruit, so I can't tell, but I'll keep you updated. Stay tuned ;-)

Nice new addition! You are going to like the Haitian mango it's one of my alltime favorite, in fact, I forgot to add it to my top 5 mango list.

Congrats on the healthy newly planted trees, awaiting the future fruit update. Seeing these pictures is giving me the mango itch again... wanting another mango tree lol.

Where the heck are you located? From the Google Earth photos it looks like either the Mojave desert or the Dead Sea region in Israel....

I'll be curious to see how the Mulgoba does.

Mulgoba used to be propagated here ages ago. Not many of them left other than a few examples in the major collections and some very old trees in Palm Beach County. Hasn't done well in Florida but the fruit quality is supposed to be outstanding.

Yeah must zoom out. Felipe is off the Moroccan Coast, same latitude as Gainsville Florida, in Canary Islands. So many mango varieties.... so hard to get a hold of over there. Or do they have a research station I think Felipe mentioned?

Felipe, Gouveia is a very popular large sized and extra good tasting mango from Hawaii. I remeber reading that Madame Francis is very turpentinie and not good tasting. Is this not true JF? I guess that is the one you are referring to when you say the Haitian mango is very good tasting?

Harry, from those, I have tasted only Valencia Pride and Ataulfo.

My plants are located in the island of Gran Canaria, but due to work I'm not living there. Those cultivars come from germplasm collection of a public research institute in the neighbour island (Tenerife). Yes, those are rather old school, but hopefully I go super new school in a few month ;-) Besides that, I'm still aiming for indian and pakistany mangos. I love that mangos and I think our hot and dry climate would be suited for them.

From what I've read, Madame Francis is supposed to be excellent tasting, but has lots of fibre. I'll give it a chance, if don't like it, it will be topworked...

Madame Francis is for sure fibrous. The flavor is actually pretty good. My friends from Haiti think it is the best flavored mango in the world. There is obviosly the old "what they've known from their childhood" prejudice at work here. Similarly, many Jamaicans love East Indian. I grow both but honestly don't eat them myself. I get far more enjoyment giving or selling these fruits to the folks that really love them then in eating them myself.

Yes Harry, the childhood conditioning influences a lot! On the other hand, if the never tasted different high quality cultivars, they will stick to "the mangos I have always eaten (the only I know) are the best". The same is here with turpentine mangos and dward cavendish bananas. People over here say their bananas (d. cavendish) are the best, but their have never tasted other bananas..

Is MF a vigorous grower?

Madame Francis is not vigorous at my house. But, it was a relatively recent planting and is planted in a location where it gets shade about half the day. So I am not sure you can draw any conclusions about growth habit from my experience. It is very disease resistant and fruits fairly heavily without spraying. So that is a plus. On the negative side, it does not do much in the way of gaining color upon ripening.
