I have read that to creat a “dwarf” mango tree of any desired cultivar, farmers use a “dwarf” interatock. Does this theory hold true for avocados? I want to plant a wurtz/mini cado tree in a space where the tree can not get too big. I would like to graft a couple other varieties onto the mini cado tree but will this “dwarf” interstock produce slower growing grafts or will the other grafts just dominate the mini cado and grow to a typically large avocado tree size?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Big Jim Peluche loquat?
« on: October 23, 2023, 10:29:37 PM »
So I was given loquat scions that were labeled Big Jim Peluche. I tried getting clarification on whether it is Big Jim or Peluche but got no clear answer. Is Big Jim is a Peluche seedling? Or is there a Big Jim Peluche variety? Or is this simply mislabeled and now I'm stuck with a NoID?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please help ID my inga
« on: October 02, 2023, 10:42:35 PM »
I acquired an ice cream bean tree two years ago and plants it in ground. The tree finally flowered and is setting fruit but the flowers and beans look a little different than the more common icecream bean I have seen. The person I got the plant from does not know which one it is either. Would love to know what exactly I am growing and when to harvest it. Pods are yellowing but I picked one the other day and hardly any fluff inside, almost all seed right now. Thanks for your help and advice.

Citrus General Discussion / Does my citrus have HLB?
« on: March 19, 2019, 06:25:24 PM »
When we moved into our new place there were many preexisting citrus trees several of which were not in good shape. One tree in particular hasn’t improved since we started taking care of it. A friend recently told me it might be huanglongbing which I knew little about and was unaware exists in Hawaii. If it is infected with HLB I will be getting rid of it immediately but I want a second opinion before doing so. What do you guys think? Also if it is HLB how quickly does it spread?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why won’t my miracle berry produce fruit?
« on: September 04, 2018, 03:28:21 PM »
My miracle berry tree is in bloom but for some reason it won’t produce fruit. I tried giving the tree a little shake her and there to help pollinate but so far it has only produced 3 fruits. The flowers keep falling off. Any suggestions?

Citrus General Discussion / Kosrae green tangerines
« on: April 23, 2018, 04:48:34 AM »
My husband use to fly through the island of kosrae regularly and would rave about their green, seedless,  sweet, easy to peel, tangerines. Sadly he was not allowed to bring any back home due to Hawaii’s agriculture regulations. He no longer flies to kosrae and really wants to find out what kind of tangerines grow there and how to get a tree if even possible. Does anyone know the name of the local green kosrae tangerines?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Peaches growing in Hawaii?
« on: April 18, 2018, 03:40:11 PM »
Home Depot sells Long Beach Peach trees. They claim it can produce in Hawaii even though it states 200 chill hours. So I was wondering if anyone has successfully grown peaches in Hawaii? More specifically lowland Hawaii or on Oahu.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Any drawback to Maha chanok?
« on: March 02, 2018, 06:33:11 AM »
I want to get a Maha chanok but told the husband I won’t plant any more fruit trees for a while... so before I sneak one in, I was wondering if there are any drawbacks to this mango? Any reason why I shouldn’t get it? Also I have read mixed information in regards to the growth and size of the tree. Some saw it is a slow growing dwarf while others say the opposite. Your input would be greatly appreciated :)

Is Pirie and white Pirie 2 different mangoes? If so how do they differ? And has anyone heard of yello or gold pirie? In China town the other day one of the venders was selling mangoes in a box listed as pirie. There were two different different types of mango in the box and when I asked what is the difference she claimed  the larger mango was white pirie while the smaller one was yellow/gold pirie and was sweeter and better in taste.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What mango taste closest to a Haden?
« on: January 25, 2018, 03:13:37 AM »
Growing up in Hawaii the two most popular back yard mango trees were Haden and pirie. To this day, Haden is still my favorite. I know it's dropped out in popularity, especially among you mango enthusiasts, but i can't get enough of it. I love the sweet, spicy, rich mango flavor it has and don't mind that it's fibrous.  I only have room for one mango tree and want to plant a Haden but I'm concerned about it being susceptible to disease. What mango is closest to Haden in flavor and richness yet is disease resistant? Or should I just plant a Haden....?

A while back i uprooted a miracle fruit from a friends house and brought it home. On close inspection Of the sickly plant I noticed it had these tiny black bumps on it’s branches and trunk. I didn’t think much of it until I recently noticed a few of the same bumps on my wax jambu and soursop. I don’t recall seeing them on my other plants before, but then again I’m not the most observant person so I can’t be 100% sure. They are dry and pop off easily if I scratch at it.  Is this something i should worry about and treat or is it benign?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing atemoya on Oahu?
« on: December 03, 2017, 01:44:28 PM »
I was told by local fruit nursery owner that I shouldn't waste my time trying to grow Atemoya on Oahu because we have a seed boring bug that ruins all the fruit. I know atemoya grows successfully on Big Island, but has anyone gotten it to fruit on Oahu?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Transplanting Miracle fruit?
« on: November 10, 2017, 03:09:57 AM »
A friend of mine wants to get rid of her sadly neglected miracle fruit tree. The little guy is about one foot tall and was planted in the ground about 3-5 years ago. I want to try transplant it if possible. Does anyone know if it is ok to transplant to a pot or would it be better to transplant in the ground. The plant looks so sad. I hope he can survive the shock of being dug up.

Citrus General Discussion / Please help calamansi is dying :(
« on: October 17, 2017, 09:56:53 PM »
My calamansi tree was doing well till I transplanted and trimmed it. New buds die immediatelly so it can't produce new growth and old leaves are dying.  Here is what it looks like. If anyone can tell me what's wrong it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Luc's Mexican Garcinia
« on: August 21, 2017, 09:41:23 PM »
Can anyone explain the difference in taste between the Achacha and Luc's Mexican Garcinia. Which one is sweeter and has better flavor? I finally got my hands on a couple Achacha plants and then heard about Lucangosteen and am wondering if I should try plant those as well or instead of the Achacha. I have a small back yard in Honolulu but am trying to fill it up with tropical fruit trees. I'm not a great gardener but I'm trying to learn :)
