Can I save my coffee plant?
« on: April 08, 2019, 07:39:53 AM »
I purchased an arabica coffee plant in a 2 gallon pot.  It looks like it is big enough to re-pot, but it is still in the shipping pot.  I've have it for 4 or 5 days.  I put it in partial shade, and watered it every day.

The leaves are turning brown, starting from the bottom of the plant, starting from the outside edges of the leaves.  I feel like I need to take action to save it before this gets too bad.

I can't think it is underwatered, but possibly overwatered.  Or, is this a common fungus or something?  What would you do in this situation?  I am ready to repot the plant if this is something that can be stopped.  thanks.

Sounds like it was treated roughly maybe cold, heat, sun wet or dryness. Plants grown in greenhouses/shadehouses become very pampered and sellers seldom harden them off by slow exposure to sun, wind, cold, elements etc. I recall you wanted to grow coffee in Florida in full afternoon sun. Coffee can grow in full sun but is usually a shade lover. Good luck with your plant. Maybe consider buying local plants where you can have better control and choices.

I would repot it into well draining soil and a little larger pot. Don’t disturb the root ball. Keep it more in the shade and spray water on leaves often. It will overcome the shock and will start growing new leaves. Coffees are tough plants!

Thanks both of you.  I have kept it pretty well shaded as I read it is best to slowly expose them to sun.  I have a spot that is less than 50 % sun where I intend to plant it in a bigger pot.  I guess I'll go forward and see if it recovers, then.  It doesn't seem like you guys recognize something that would require treatment, then, eh?  thanks again

p.s.  It is already growing new leaves on top that look great.  It is just some of the leaves on the bottom (for now) that seem to be slowly giving up on life.

Wow, is that thing like 12 feet tall?  Mine said 6 foot at maturity, which is what I am hoping for.

Just bloomed and about to make cherries

Edible cherries are slightly sweet but not much to them but two seeds which are the beans

But easiest way to clean them is eat the cherry
