PPK, CC, Fairchild, and Pickering and not a single flower as of yet this season................sad panda

Your not alone. still waiting....
My Glenn, Coco Cream, and NDM have swollen nodes. But they've been like that for months

Same here... We've gotten plenty of cool nights followed by weather in the upper 70s and low 80s, but nothing at all has happened.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: True Cavendish Banana in FL?
« on: February 24, 2017, 11:17:23 AM »
With so much variety there's no need to grow what can be bought at the store... I prefer a a mysore, namwah, Brazilian, or pitogo that is ripened on the plant to a store bought banana anyaay. They're a lot smaller but you get so many bananas that it doesn't matter. There are exotic varieties too that have small nuances in flavor too. I have about 20 different types in my yard

Do you mean recommendations as far as what you could graft on to those?

Yes,  what I could AND should based on what the experts have grown and tasted.

is this the same cold tolerance as normal papaya ?
i remember seeing a couple of thread about this  years ago
i wanted seeds, but, if the fruit is not as good as papaya, ive no reason to grow it
unless it has a better cold tolerance ?

I doubt it. I can confirm that the fruit is not as sweet as other types... I grow it more for the uniqueness. People in the neighborhood always stop to look at it. Maybe it can be crossed with a sweeter variety and maintain the same leaf structure. I have one in my backyard that isn't isolated, so maybe I'll plant some and see what I get.

I use wunderground because there's a station nearby but I have no idea how accurate it is...  That said Google weather is freakishly good at predicting when it will rain...  Within seconds or minutes sometimes and even while driving.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fabric pots - Durability?
« on: February 20, 2017, 07:04:52 PM »
I have used smart pots and jack pots and I find the jack pots to be way thicker. Roots do get stuck to the side but don't grow through. I have use smart pots for years with no real degradation. Biggest problem is salt build up for me. The jack pots probed 5o outperform the competition in a study I found on the web.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Advantages of Eating Apples Every Day

I can afford to pay a little more in the short term for a better outcome for my kids which will save me more in the long term. Don't get me confused,  I am not saying that a glass of apple juice will cause negative effects,  but what the USDA measures as safe levels of pesticide is based on acute (short term)  exposure. Long term exposure of drinking apple juice as a child will have an impact.  Look in the places where we send our pesticides after we realize they are dangerous.  The children there will never recover from their developmental deficits. That's because what is safe to an adult is not necessarily safe to kids.So yeah, I will pay a little more in the short term, and I am a single income household for what it's worth.

Too each his own.  For me I will continue to avoid pesticide exposure where it is meaningful, and especially for my kids.  Chronic exposure to pesticides in children has shown to effect hormones and hand-eye coordination. As demonstrated in South and Central America where a lot of our phased out pesticides end up. I wouldn't be surprised if that produce re-enters the US.

I personally juice the whole apple,  skin, seeds and all in my juicer,  have not died yet.   I can detect that slight bitter from the seeds,  but like the saying goes,  its 1 apple a day,  not a dozen.   the way I see things is,  everything is toxic on this planet,  what is harmful or beneficial, depends on the dosage.

Next time you are in US go to Costco, pick up an apple box and read a cocktail of chemical sprayed on apples too keep them pristine for over a year after harvest. There are like 5 chemicals if I remember correctly. Some forms of wax maybe undigestible. On top of that apple is probably most pesticide laden fruit grown conventionally in US. Do various search terms for US apple on Google. I would at least peel commercial US apple if you are going to eat one.

yeah, that's why i only buy organic apples. my kids love them and i couldn't imagine the harm they cause over the long term. same goes for apple juice--it's like a neurotoxin cocktail.

Any recommendations on what to graft onto my dream or rollinia?
I would go with cherimoya with dream. I've been experimenting with biriba I may have found the best rootstock for our climate but I want to fruit it before I reveal it.

I thought dream was the only "cherimoya" I could grow in Florida?

No it's an atemoya known here in California as Arka Sahan

i put cherimoya in quotations to avoid the drama, but i guess i should have known better... where can i get arka sahan?

thanks for sharing... i didn't realize apples were such a healthy fruit. i have always heard that apple juice is not so good for you since it's loaded with sugar, but i wonder if it contains the same amount of antioxidants.

I haven't seen these on the forum in a while and I am not sure who was originally selling them, but I am harvesting my first fruit today and will have seeds available from now until early spring. I have this tree isolated away from the other papaya I have growing, but unfortunately these are not the ones with the purple petioles.

10 seeds for $15 shipped within CONUS. I would also be interested in making a trade for anything I don't have.

Yeah, I don't have any direct experience with FHIA-1 or SH-3640, but after some research I see they are 8-12'. From my experience the first couple ratoons of dwarf Brazilian are around 6', though...  Later ratoons are taller. My 3rd ratoons is about 8'.

FHIA-1 and SH-3640 are both dwarfish... Not sure how big they get though. Also there's supposedly some misidentified FHIA-1s floating around out there. Dwarf Brazilian starts small (~6') but the following ratoons (?) are more like 8-10'

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Looking for a few avocado scions
« on: February 02, 2017, 10:19:16 PM »
I currently have an avocado seedling that is probably 6 years old. I cut it down to about 4 feet and am looking to top work it. I'm looking for 3 good varieties to work into the tree. Doesn't have to be anything special, I just don't have much access to budwood (Anyone in Central FL who has some to spare, I would gladly trade or purchase scions). Thanks for the suggestions and material!

I have Florida Hass but it's flowering right now

I have Kari, Sri K, Harte, Dwarf Hawaiian, Dwarf Maher, Fwang Tung and Lara. My Harte hasn't bore yet since acquiring 3-4 yrs ago as big 3 gal. The rest have bore fruit multiple times and my fav is Sri K. I was also impressed with Dwarf Maher though the fruits are smaller. Lara is very vigorious and productive in my yard.

Good to hear about the dwarf Maher...  I took a gamble when I bought it last year.
