Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: NeelKiran Mango
« on: September 12, 2016, 10:01:58 PM »
A friend from this forum sent me a small NeelKiran Mango and I thought it was delicious. NeelKiran is the cross between an Alphonso and a Neelam. It had much firmer flesh than both Neelam and Alphonso and it had a Brix of 20%. It has more of an Alphonso influence for its flavor with a nice Indian resin flavor. I cut one side of the fruit and noticed that it did not have any spongy tissue but then I cut the other half and there was minor spongy tissue. I like NeelKiran a lot more than Alphonso but I still prefer Kesar more than any other Indian Mango(Indian resin flavor).

Simon

I'm surprised it has spongy tissue, given that all websites describing it indicate it is spongy tissue free, must be a case of misleading release hype. Thanks for the review!

Fun! I've never really payed attention to either Edward or Cogshall, but i see 14 pages of posts on each. Edward seems to be more consistently praised than Cogshall.

That's a sweet tart not st. Maui. Confusing but ST generally means sweet tart on this forum

Aloha is descendant from White Piri I believe, sounds like a winner though!

Sounds about right. I think the hot, hot, day temps aren't as important as many think. At the very least 83F means it can grown far outside of the steamy summers most of the continental USA has. So,I would make it a recommended try in nor cal. My seedling has taken to the ground fast. Aultalfo when you fertilize it? develops a very dark green glossy leaf. I don't notice that on Baileys or Manila.
Its going to have to grow more for me to see if its more ornamental in the landscape as well as delicious.

what article are you referring too?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting Mangos of 2016
« on: July 26, 2016, 11:49:27 PM »
Gary was tidy?  All the Gary I have had this year were its usual off the chart.

LZs picked properly have been excellent.  The Pineapple Pleasure have been sweeter this year, more overpowering tbe acidic component.

Tidy is perhaps local vernacular to say all is in place. Which for Gary, is great.  Mine were a bit scabby but otherwise ok.  85% of their prime in taste.

Our loss with the lack of blogging 😃 how did j-12 compare to the heavyweights?

Few consistent tasting mangoes this year.  PPK was the most on its usual mark. Most LZ were subprime but the good were great.  CC was great.  Mario a pleasant surprise.  Gary was tidy.  Juliette was another pleasant surprise.  Guava was delicious. Edward seemed better than ever. Graham was delectable. Dupuis was not its usual self but still good.

1. PPK
2. Lemon zest
3. Coconut cream
4. Mario
5. Gary
6. Juliette
7. Guava
8. Edward
9. Graham
10. Dupuis

Honourble mention
Nam doc Mai
Dot
27-18
Maha Chanok

Good List! Where is Future's mango feast this year?!

Just looked and Florigon appears to be poly, but it appears yours did not grow true thus you still have a unique variety on your hands

58
Since that is not a Florigon,  you cznt make any parallel conclusions and comparisons to Florigon.   In addition,  you are not in a mango growing region, specifically Florida,  where its an early season mango.

So you are saying it could be a Florigon seedling ?

Im just trying to figure out what it is.

It could be, but if it was Florigon, they do not grow true to seed as they are mono (I believe). Thus, you have your own unique variety that is entirely new with all new taste, growth habit, etc.

plantogram, thewildpapya are other nurseries that ship

61
Do you think it will fruit? They talked about planting mostly Jamaican fruits like Akee, Jackfruit, Mango etc. It might be interesting to see how it works out. Maybe they'll even work out a breadfruit or Jamaican nutmeg if they're lucky.

Yes Jackfruit will fruit in Southern California

that's a nice looking tree! To ensure good size you might want to thin depending on how much fruit you got on there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Amazing Annona fruits from JF
« on: December 11, 2015, 11:20:55 AM »

I ordered a box of fruits from Frank and got to same two last night.

First up was the Calostro. This is the first atemoya I have ever eaten, and it was delicious! Right up there with some cherimoyas, the flesh was a little more chewy or firm but the taste was great.

Next I had a Birula. When I cut this open there was a noticeable pink tinge in the flesh. The flesh was a little more chewy than Calostro but was not objectionable. The taste was amazing, with a lot of different flavor profiles. My family (brother, wife, and Mother) all enjoyed this one slightly more.

Tonight the cherimoyas in the box should be ready to go head to head with the atemoyas and it is going to be a close fight.

Hello Everyone.  I really love tropical fruits and I used to order cherimoya online from cherimoya.com but they no longer offer that so I don't know where else to go.  I also love atemoya very much and soursop too but there is no where I can trust online other than the one I ordered before.  I know you guys and gals here are tropical fruit lovers too so I'm asking and hoping if you have any info or ordered from certain company before with good result. I live in PA and there is soursop and maybe sometime cherimoya but they are not sweet at all here.  I was a member from gardenweb (ch3rri) if anyone remember. :)  I want to say hi to everyone!!!  Hope everyone is well!

Kristy

Hey Kristy,

You might want to try and message "JF". He sells both atemoyas and cherimoyas by the box and ships them as well. I picked one up from him a couple days ago and am eagerly awaiting their ripening.

I'm so sorry to hear about Roger Meyer passing . When  did he pass ? He will be greatly missed 😢  I hope that he's tending to the " tree  of  life  "  in heaven.

It looks like he passed away on 11/22/15. I have bought a number of trees from him and can say He was a very good man.

I'd like some Beverly, Fairchild, and Icecream scions when available. Three or four of each would be excellent.

check out this thread. http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=17605.0

My elevation says 900 ft. How did you guys know whether they'll survive or not?
Because my neighbor has two guanabana for 2 years and his are still alive.

What is the coldest it gets in winter?

U think my huanabana wud survive in my area? ( san fernando valley)

Ty

Probably not, your winters are  too cold. They are fringe even in coastal Southern California.

72
Hey,

It all depends on your specific climate. How cold is the low during winter? if it gets below freezing for more than a few hours than you are going to have trouble growing tropicals/sub-tropicals.

soursop is a no, unless you bring it in every winter. Cherimoya might work depending on the low you get. Not sure on the others.

Best,
Eric

73
lots of varieties! I'm interested in the cost as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Kaimana Lychee
« on: August 21, 2015, 11:30:25 AM »
FYI -

Mimosa in Los Angeles has sale on Lychees.

15 gal is for sale $100, original price $200 (5-6 feet tall). They have sweetheart, Mauritius, Brewster.
7 Gal is for sale $90, original price $180 (36"), too damn expensive compared to 15 gal.
3 Gal on sale for $50, size of some are better than or within 20% of 7 GAL. They have Kaimana.

I picked 15-gal Brewster and 3-Gal Kaimana. I will fancy my chances of growing Kaimana in foothills of Corona, 1200 feet elevation, I get decent chill hours too.

Thanks for the heads up Behl! I picked up a kaimana today.
