4th annual fruit tasting in Anaheim Hills
« on: December 17, 2016, 11:46:33 PM »
This is the fourth annual fruit tasting we have had here in the beautiful picturesque Anaheim Hills. This event was kept purposefully small and made it much easier to organize and answer questions. We had Cherimoyas, Atemoyas, Mangos, Dragonfruit, Persimmons, Guavas, Sugarcane and probably a few others I forgot. Here is a link to last years event. http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=18899.msg235334#msg235334

Here is the results for the Cherimoya tasting. Some of the Cherimoyas were overripe but there were several that were spectacular with excellent sugar acid balance. Orton is a perennial front runner and the top 6 were all excellent tasting.

Dr. Robert, Xue and I were discussing the virtues of a palate cleanser after tasting each variety and we started to over think the topic and began to wonder if the residual salt from your typical palate cleanser( saltines, ritz, Gardettos) might actually skew the taste of the next fruit sampled because of the flavor enhancing attributes of salt🤔

We did not formally evaluate/rate the Mangos but we did take some Brix readings and discussed amongst ourselves which variety we felt tasted the best.

My personal favorites are Manohar, Nam Doc Mai, two of Rudy's selections and then Maha. Rudy brought some sugar bombs but I preferred Manohar which was sweet and complex. The Manohar had some Indian Umami which reminded me of Kesar but Manohar did not have the Indian resinous taste that Kesar and Alphonso has.

I picked some Peggy, Seedling #3, NDM and a few other varieties from Leo Manuels yard and it took about two weeks for these mangos to ripen. Most the mangos from Leo's yard were harvested prematurely but the NDM tasted especially good and sweet considering it was picked almost completely green.

Nice write up Simon! Looks like quite a few fruit!

I don't recognize most of the cherimoya varities, and they mostly a collection of Ashok's seedlings?

Which ones on the list are atemoyas?  I recognize Colostro.  Any others that we Floridians might grow?

Looks Luke another great tasting, and thanks for the ranking and brix chart.

I liked Radhika but the Maalina and Madhur had really high seed count. Are they different this year? I wonder if Ashok just pollinates really well.

Another successful tasting thanks to Ashok & family and the other volunteers, like Simon. The tasting was smaller yet impressive. As anyone who has hosted or participated in an event like this knows that it is impossible to have varieties of different season all ripening at the same time. AZ makes an amazing attemp and gets close to doing it. My personal favorite fruits were Orton cherimoya and Manohar mango. Here are some pix and one of Rudy's unique mango varieties.

Thanks Simon and JF for sharing nice pictures and brix results.

What are those guavas and dragon fruit varieties and any brix results to share?

I'm not sure what varieties of Guava those were, there were several varieties but I didn't sample any as I was already stuffed with fruit. The DF varieties are Halleys Comet, Simons Purple and Frankie's Red. These were the last remaining fruit on my vines so they did not reach their peak Brix and I didn't bother taking a reading. My Yellow Dragon is flowering now but fruit won't be ready for some time.
