I'm still learning the art of grafting...

So far, I had success grafting:

White sapote, Rollinia mucosa, Ficus carica and
 Annona muricata onto A. montana.

The next few days, I want to try A. diversifolia and A. squamosa onto A. cherimola.

Once I get a few Lucuma (P. obovata) seedlings, I would like to try Green sapote and Mamey onto lucuma.

I grafted pink guavas onto my white asians, various annonas on to my cherimoya, plums on apricots, pear on apple, apple on pear. all dormant right now. everything was cleft graft with parafilm.

On, I also grasted roses, cleft method and got few that took graft within a week and are growing vigrously. at least got some success.

Oh, forgot to mention, I tried grafting longan onto longan seedling, and lychee onto longan, I am told that these dont graft well, will see. As I am in more for learning so it would be good experiment. if grafts take, I will post here. I read an article that said that lychees can be grafted onto longans, trick is to have scion that is ready to pop and root stock that is actively pushing for growth, and do a cleft graft towards 1/3 of the section.

If u can graft roses, then you have the idea down!

(back to your annona grafts not being totally covered...maybe its ok to do that near u, where the climate is milder...I'm not sure.  Please let me know if they take! Good luck!)

Forgot to mention I grafted alupag onto longan...and some are pushing!

Bill whitman said he grafted some that grew like weeds, but didn't flower as abundantly as his marcotted alupags.

I think your lychee longan grafts should work

This time I made sure my lychee and longan scions were well covered. I hate weather here, its a see saw with rail (welcome), gets cold (low 40's) and to mid 80's. wild swings.

Adam,

That is an interesting graft.

Wow Adam, you are the man!  That is a great use for my alupags and longan seedlings, thanks for the inspiration.  So far for me, paw paw, various apricots, plums, and autumn olive.  Hopefully in the near future, atemoya, muntingia, custard apple, white sapote, jak, mango, sapodilla and now alupag/longan.

Adam, have you had the fruit of Alupag? I had it at Bill Whitman's years ago.  The ones he had were of scant flesh and didn't seem worth growing...except as a rarity or oddity.  Have you expereinced otherwise?

Harry,

No I've never tasted this rarity.

They look like a mini sugar apple, and have big old seeds, but taste super sweet...that's what I hear.

I don't mind poor seed to pulp ratio.  I eat a wide variety of fruits mainly to obtain medicinal and nutritional value...not for sweetness or to fill my stomach.

U must have been doing this tropical fruit thing for quite some time, or so it seems...I've only been at it about 6-7yrs...so my tasting experiences have been somewhat limited.  I'm glad to have u here to give me some feedback on these rare trees I'm propagating.  I don't really have many first hand accounts of what they taste like!

Thanks for the input.

Not sure what the nutritional content is of the Alupag.  To me it was longanish in flavor.....sweet wioth some additonal flavor overtones.  The problem with the ones that I tried at Whitman's were that the edible flesh only covered like the top half of the seed.  The outside skin was somewhat leathery, lychee like more than longanish. Just not too much to eat inside.  The tree that  bore the fruit was not thriving at Whitman's and my attempts years ago to propagatethe plant bny seed did not lead to much success.  I must have been doing something wrong. You may have found a better growing method to get better vigor in the seedlings.  Hopefully, anyway.

I think marcott is the way to go..at least according to whitman.

His book says (if I remember) that his grafted alupag on longan rootstocks grew very fast, but never really flowered much...whereas his marcotted specimen was a consistent bearer, but small and slow growing.

Basically sounds like if I got a marcott, it would be easy to fruit in a pot!
They handle cold like a champ...freezes are never a problem.

I do remember him saying that there was excellent cold tolerance with the Alupag.

On the grafting front.....I am an avid, but not very skilled grafter.  I have grafting successes with the following:

Mango, Loquat, Mammee Apple, jakfruit, atemoya, white sapote, various citrus, black sapote, surinam cherry, avocado, and apple. Usually takes many attempts to get a successful take. :(
