Brian Lavin posted on Facebook CRFG (California Rare Fruit Growers);
"A number of fruits I took pictures of on several trips (5-6) to SoCal in 2015. Was trying to get a good picture of various fruits. (Made a alternative crop lecture) Most of these come from Fullerton, SD/Quail, or LA Arbo."

Ice Cream Bean-Fullerton

Yellow Mangosteen-Fullerton

Peruvian Apple Cactus

Brian Lavin; "I will see if I can find my others. Feel free to use them for fruit related non-profit projects. Just give me a photo credit if you do. I have Chico Sapote/Sapodilla and some others somewhere."

Still more pictures Brian Lavin posted on Facebook California Rare Fruit Growers.

"Canistel ripening in Fullerton. These things were on the tree from May to Oct. and they still weren't ripe. Didn't make it back to Fullerton in Dec."

"The fruit (Lucuma) I think deserves way more exposure in California. I crave these, but probably won't have my own for awhile. My oldest trees are only 4 years old. You get use to the dry texture they do leave your hands and mouth with gold powder on them sometimes though."

"Fruit the Squirrels had ate. 5 second rule . . ."

"The seeds sometimes sprout in these. Some seeds seem to have difficulty producing both a shoot and a root."

"Lucuma is better then Mamey or Canistel IMO. Have not been able to compare to Green Sapote yet."

Great pictures. Ong sells yellow and regular mangosteen but it's nice to see photo evidence that they do in fact survive and fruit here; I was skeptical. I have never heard of "water berry"; do you know its latin name?

Thanks for posting the beautiful pictures. I was not aware we had a fruiting yellow mangosteen here in SoCal. I wish the San Diego zoo planted more fruit trees around the park so they can feed the animals more fruit from their native lands. Canistel is now on my list of fruits to try.

Simon, the canistel is my favorite out of the pouterias that I have tried. I'm still waiting for my cinnamon apple and Ross spate to hold fruit. I have 3 canistels and they are real nice.
That "yellow mangosteen" is at Fullerton and I believe is Xanthochymus, I have one grafted on my Livingstonei.

Yeah the Yellow Mangosteen is at Fullerton and fruits in 2015.  The Waterberry is the one at Quail/SD (Syzygium cordatum).

It was a sweet and watery taste with after astringency.  Not sure if you'd want to devote the space to it if your not a collector/lot of land/a botanical garden.  Not bad, but not top tier.

Thanks for posting I was always to lazy to post them here.

What was most surprising was the fruiting Canistel in Fullerton.  It's grafted on something else (Mamey?)

They did have lots of rare fruit trees planted there in the past, donated by CRFG in its early years. When the zoo switched management, the new person decided to get rid of them. Members did a massive fruit tree "rescue" and most of them were relocated to a member's property and later given to him since nobody else was willing to take care of them. Now the SD Zoo still has some fruit trees but they're sparce and most people don't know they're there.

That's horrible, I can't believe they planted the trees and then took them out. The zoo need new management to think outside the box and improve on many aspects of the park.

I still can't believe they have not replaced the Extreme Smog producing double decker busses! Those things release so much pollution and must be horrible for humans and animals alike. They should be replaced with electric vehicles. More native fruits for the animals couldn't hurt either!
