My mango seeds sprouted
« on: July 04, 2014, 06:20:37 PM »
These are store bought Ataulfos, planted last May. One has 3 sprouts welded together, so I'll keep all 3, but the other one has 2 separate sprouts. I read on GW, that the smaller sprouts are usually clones of the mother trees, or are they?

nch,

From what I have read too, the smaller ones are the clones.
But propagating nurseries often use the larger "healthier looking" one, which I think is the zygote.
In your case, I believe you are using them for rootstock only....so in my opinion, it doesn't really matter too much which one you use.
On occasion, I have successfully split the ataulfo growths into 2 or more separate plants (more rootstock!), but it is somewhat trickier and not always successful depending on whether there are distinguishable separate roots for each plant/seed section.
I've got about 50-60 ataulfo rootstocks growing myself...gearing up too for the future mango scion exchange.

Good luck.

Thanks, Warren. I actually want to keep the clones, as I don't have much faith in my mango grafting skills yet. Maybe in 3-4 years. LOL. How are your mango grafts doing?

Nch,
Grafting success has been a little more difficult than anticipated.  However, we were able to successfully propagate 2 Hawaiian, 1 Malaysian, and 2 Indian mango varieties. Working on a third Hawaiian variety now.  Trials of 6 Florida varieties started in June, but too early to tell.  More trials of Hawaiian and Florida varieties will happen later this month.

You sound so much more advanced than me, Warren. BTW, did you see what JF posted on the "Buy/Sell" forum about Costco having a tropical fruit tree sale? I will go, but I am not planning on buying any (so I say, LOL). I am currently growing some 30 Cherimoya seedlings in the ground, hoping to get a good variety one day.

Thanks nch!  Just read JF's post on the Costco FV subtropical sale.  I wish it could have started this weekend instead of on Monday.  Since I have to go to work on Monday, I guess I will have to recruit a spy to see if a LVN Villasenor mango tree is in the 475585 #5 Grafted Mango category.
