If you want my advice I'd move it.  The reason being in your location I'd put something more zone pushing next to that wall for the heat radiation.

So this one isn't "Edgehill"?  I found one location that supposedly has it, but haven't checked it out yet.

I really like John Herd.  Growing it in NorCal.  I first had some at Green Scene.  I liked it better then Jan Boyce, etc.

Thanks for all the advice.  Will use my material tonight.

I have a few scions of a variety of Acerola I like I got on my travels.  I figured I'd try to root 2 and graft 2 to a Florida Sweet.  Anyone have any tips of type of graft?  Does Acerola root easily?  Hormone help?

I also have one scion of the Peanut Butter Fruit that has green smooth leaves.  Any tips on rooting?  I could also graft part of it, but my larger Peanut Butter Fruit is the fuzzy leaved species.  Do they graft successfully?

My advice is to ignore things that need any but the shortest chill if on the beach in SD.  Maybe look at the fruit planting at Quail/SDBG.  Some of the temperate stuff that uses heat units more then chill?  Remember near beaches can be high fruit theft areas by visitors and tent people.

Just so you guys know.  A lot of Northern California locations don't have enough winter to fruit most varieties.

Just curious as to the origin behind this variety.  Heard one or two different things from people.

Thanks everyone.  Mainly wanted to see if I can hit up any new spots.

Any good Kaffir Plum street trees left? Especially where I could take a picture of the entire tree?  Exotica has one, but not really easy to take a photo of the tree.

I gave some odd seeds for the Bancroft Garden about two years ago.  Hopefully some survived.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I usually hit up those nurseries.  Do any of the colleges have botanical gardens with fruit stuff?

Any interesting fruit stuff to see in the San Diego Co. area besides the botanical garden and Balboa Park area?

Would be interested in seeing semi-edible street trees as well if interesting.

Might have some time to burn either next Thurs or Fri.

Are any of the non-Bignay Antidesma species high quality?

Does anyone know the type of sex ratio you get from seed?

They don't eat ginkgo fruits. ;)

I like persimmons with unusual tastes.  So I like Kurokuma, Tribble, Chocolate, Coffeecake, etc.  Gotta take the taste experience to the next level.  I guess it's similar to the people who like other flavors in a mango.  Hyakume is good to.

For regular persimmon taste maybe look at some of the other fuyu types like Imoto and Izu, etc.  Store bought fuyu/jiro trees are just OK in my opinion.

Nice.  Do you recommend those varieties for NorCal.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Guavas in Nor Cal?
« on: September 07, 2018, 01:08:30 PM »
Your going to need to seriously protect it like directly next to house and under a overhang.  Tropical Guava is also problematic for me in that it ripens in winter and the red juicing ones can be sour.  The best NorCal guavas grow in places that get some heat, but almost no frost.  Then they are good.  4 other species though do fine for me though.

Well in theory there is a way to tell, but it is dependent on a few things.

You'd need a method to look at the genetics at a level able to tell individuals apart (usually) like microsats.  Then you'd have to have enough sequenced.

You'd then need a database of other likely cultivars.  This could get expensive and time consuming if you have to make this from scratch, but if you limit it to things it would likely be 75 years ago it might be less intensive.

In theory if you do enough markers you get a unique patterns and could tell an individual apart.  In an ideal situation there'd be someone who researches mangos with a database willing to look at your sample.  It might be worth searching if someone works on the genetics of mangos.

If your thinking Black Sapote isn't great I wouldn't be getting too excited abut June Plum.

I've never heard of Peanut Butter Trees being male and female.  I thought flowers were perfect?

I saw a tree die where a lot of local homeless people pee on it.  Too much salt and urea?  Might be a solution.

Two sexes.  Mine had deep tap roots.  Mine died, maybe water related.

Any chance Foothill can tape it for the other CRFG chapters.  I'd like to go but 400 miles away.
