Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trees that come back
« on: August 11, 2020, 04:43:31 PM »
I dug these up a couple months ago as deep as a spade would go, so about a foot deep. Neither was bigger than half an inch diameter though the roots were twice that. Both have returned quite vigorously.

Curry leaf dug up and replaced with longan. Has reappeared in four shoots.

This was a triple planted Marula  where I dug up two after approach grafting to the most vigorous. One coming back and now as tall as what I removed just a few months ago.

Do a lot of trees do this?

« on: June 11, 2020, 08:04:57 PM »
I have a seedling I’d like to top work and it doesn’t get full sun until around 2pm. Neighbors trees... Are there mango varieties that work better than others in partial shade?

My Surinams are super happy right now. Check out the different colors. Top right is a feathery yellow Regina seedling, top left is a reddish vermilion seedling. Bottom middle is marklee driveway in green with red new growth.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Arborists in San Diego that know fruit trees?

Especially Cherimoya. Friends tree just dropped a huge branch and she wants professional help.

Had it a few days ago. Nice mango. Strong Coconut flavor (but i've read in another thread http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=17443.175that Pickering loses its pineapple if left on the tree). Some fiber around the seed. Originally had about 20 fruits in this first crop, but none of the rest grew larger than a golf ball. This one was tucked away under the leaves and reached an almost normal size.

Also, the tree is now flushing like crazy. Only really healthy mango tree i have out of half a dozen florida trees and dozens of seedlings i've planted.

I have a friend who’s brother went nuts in her yard starting 7yrs ago. She’s cleaning up and getting rid of dozens of trees. Most mature. Plum and loquats would make great rootstocks. Fig and bananas are good but she doesn’t know variety.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Sweet Acorns (Chene a gland doux)
« on: July 23, 2019, 04:34:24 PM »
This is more of a curiousity, but i've been looking for the sweetest oak acorns for a while. Something edible out of hand. I now have Q. macrocarpa, gambelli, suber, lobata, emoryi, garryana. I also have probable ballota, but i'd like to get some confirmed acorns of that one.

Searching french language sites (w/ terms like "chene gland doux" or "chene gland comestible") I've read that in Algeria, Tunisia and Turkey the acorns are sold fresh or roasted. Can anyone confirm this and comment on taste?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pakistan Mulberry producing seeds?
« on: May 29, 2019, 03:07:46 PM »
We found a couple hundred seeds while making jam. There are no male mulberry trees in the neighborhood that I know of. Is this common? Are they viable? Parthenocarpic? We've only had big crops for two years. And I didn't pay attention last year when we made jam.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Trees for Horses/Livestock
« on: January 29, 2019, 06:12:55 PM »
I'm planting some trees next to neighbors with horses and cows. Eventually the fruits and leaves will reach their yards. As far as temperate and subtropical fruits/nuts, what's safe and what's beneficial? I've done a bit of searching and it seems that horses will like Carob and the leaves of Mulberry. Walnuts are a no-no. So is Bay Laurel. Most fruits not recommended? It looks like syzygium is ok, maybe even beneficial. Cloves are part of a herbal deworming product.

Other ideas?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Toona sinensis

Came across this by accident cruising Craigslist farm and garden. Sounds like a great green. I see a couple posts here that mention it in passing. Would love to hear more about it. How does it taste? Can it survive in southern California? Is it invasive?

Beautiful tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting feijoa
« on: May 27, 2018, 02:39:40 PM »
Fang surprised me with some feijoa scions a couple months ago, so I had to run over to HD and get some rootstock. About half took and I think I got at least one of each variety. Apollo, Glen's triumph, white goose, Marianne.

Thanks fang!

PS the yangmei definitely didn't take.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Fruit or nut tree to line a driveway
« on: January 18, 2018, 12:53:58 PM »
Got a new place to plant! Among other things, looking for ideas on trees to line a long and wide driveway in zone 9a. Fruit, nut or other useful. Neighbor says the coldest she's ever seen is 25F. Things I'm considering: chestnut, pistachio, cork oak, cherry, crabapple, carob, jacaranda, sapodilla, cornus kousa...

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Tree Blueberry?
« on: November 24, 2017, 03:36:20 PM »
Check out this video around 22:30. Shows a 20' tall tree blueberry. Is it really a blueberry? Viking guy posted about something similar ages ago but I didn't imagine the trunk being so robust.

Southern California folks interested in mangoes might want to check out Exotica in Vista. Looked to me like he has over 1000 plants now. He's expanding into the back lot and has a couple greenhouses full of mango too. I didn't even try to read all the tags but it has to be many tens of different varieties. Id guess mostly from Florida but a few from california. Very expensive.
