Myrciaria Guaquiea
« on: July 12, 2020, 09:05:37 PM »
I picked up this seedling this year and wondered if You would stake it vertically or
let it grow horizontally? I have seen some pictures and it seems like this tree is more of a
shrub then tree? This was one of those trees that eluded me for a long time and I really want it
to thrive.

I let mine bend over and eventually, they will start growing upwards. They've been slow growers for me.

I planted one about 7 years ago and is thriving at about 9 feet tall. It is more upright than I expected and much slower to flower that I had hoped for but it looks nice. It was slow at first and sped it growth up in about its 4th year.

I am not sure yet as mine has not fruited. I believe only half of what I read about jaboticabas and Eugenias for that matter. So many inaccurate descriptions of taste and quality are out there and even lurking in this place. I have grown a few species and varieties and tasted a few more and reality doesn't always match the romance of some species and varieties.

How much sun does your tree get?

That is a good question and for 5 years it was full sun but now a Garcinia macrocarpa is impinging so just a few hours a day. I don't think that is the issue with the ass dragging.

I was reading that this one and yellow jabo cabelludinha are VERY tolerant of fertilizer and can take tons of it. I have added Holly Tone thus far to both of those and yeah they grow, but not quickly. Greg Arabie Jr on FB was saying he is adding monthly doses of 19-9-9 Osmocote and bi weekly liquid fertilizer that was 10-10-5. I am not recommending this program personally, but he said they are extremely tolerant of fert and I will be cautiously upping the load on mine.

I am doing some testing on this one. Once you have it established, if the soil is 5.5-7 and water will s of equal ph you can pump this with nutrients. It will take some burn but man can it handle some fertilizer. My current application is as follows: monthly application of 19-5-9 osmocote, biweekly of
8-2-2 earthworks. I have 2 of these so I was actually able to test them. Insane branching and growth so far using those two applications. If you have any questions let me know.
I grow Camu Camu, it’s what I do.

I take back all the harsh words I had to say about my tree. It is now covered in flower buds. It must have been a sun issue as a storm and pruning of my red prawn opened the sun to it and the flower buds appeared.

Congratulations! That’s awesomeness. It’s always awesome when a surprise like that happens. How old is your plant?

Awesome!   potted some up to 5's and left others in 1's and they have all been boosting. The one in a 5 certainly is very large and the ones have been boosting as well. Can't wait to see these set flowers as they seem like a pretty viable option for northern california.

I've been looking for a tree as well
I ate the first guaquiea yesterday.
My yellow has never fruited so I can't compare.
It tasted like a lemondrop candy.
It had one smaller seed
I can't wait to get a handful to sample.

Thanks for the generous offer.
I have a yellow growing so that might work as rootstock , I never grafted anything from this genus so I need to do a little research first
