Coccoloba uvifera - Sea grape - Not bad...
« on: August 28, 2015, 09:46:45 AM »
I just tasted some Sea grapes for the first time and thought they had a pretty interesting and distinctive flavor. Something like tamarind, but not as sour. Once they get a little overripe they take on a musky flavor which is still OK, but definitely may put some people off.

Seems like you can do a decent wine with them.

Anyone know how long these take to fruit from seed? I know they are dioecious.

Thanks,
Jaime

Seagrapes are di? In terms of male and female plant or male and female flowers on each plant? I ask because I don't think I've ever seen one here that didn't have fruits on it and was a mature plant. I'm not sure how long they take to fruit from seed but I have heard of people making nice wine with it (grapefruit wine is great too). We have an absolutely immense tree in our yard, easily the biggest one I've ever seem in my life.

Is it just mine or are they very slow growing? I have one on a sand berm in my back yard and it has grown maybe 6" in the last year that I have had it.

They fruit here in 3-4 years under the right conditions...

Ive seen them once at the beach fruiting and had everybody there watching me gorge myself, they were good. I have 15 that are over 20 years old and just recently put out flowers, so we'll see.

The term Dioecious means having only one sex flowers per tree,so you need at least two or tree plants in order to set fruit, I guess with seagrape some people like me put 2 or 3 little seedlings together and they grow as one tree in a kind of fusion, I have my trees from a delicious purple ones( believe or not theres also green ones) from the Roatan; Honduras beach, its been 8 years and this is the second time flowering finally set only a handfull of little fruits hopefullythey get to ripen

My kids get in trouble at school for climbing the trees and eating them lol. They make a killer jam also.

I've never tried them, but I would...how could you describe their flavor?

Here they are a little salty, sweet, and a little sour. no grape flavor more like a mixed fruit leather, a combo of berry, apricot or pear, not a lot of flesh even on the good ones. Other trees taste like sour cardboard.

I like them too. I think it is possible to find some variety that is not dioecious. I even have (somewhere) a white variety (fruits never get dark) from Roatan, that Raul sent to me several years ago!
