Mare, like Brian my greenhouse foundation is also insulated from the outside soil.  This makes the entire greenhouse soil a heat sink.  In the past, on a tree or two I have also use a heating cable.

The white covering is starting to grow on me.  It is *very* bright in my greenhouse, and the water pooling problem was resolved by poking small holes in low areas.  Unless a problem appears I am going to leave it.

It will eventually become shaded.  That white can increase the leaf exposure to light up to 30% more than what you would get with dark soil.  I once had a lean to greenhouse running the entire wall of a south facing garage. I painted the north wall, the garage siding, with white latex paint.  The light was incredible. Raised the helluva orchids.
