SoCal Mango freeze
« on: December 13, 2013, 05:57:19 PM »

After this freeze I'm really thinking about investing in Mr.Thompson's new mango varieties
Will the tree recover from the freeze?

If it does recover, there is a good chance its dead on the scion and only the rootstock is still alive.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Did you happen to record the temperatures that killed it? All my seedlings outside are ok so far. Hit 33 twice.

Unless further damage occurs, you should be fine, the 'trunk' still looks green as do some of the lower leaves.  Don't cut anything dead away until spring when all chance of frosts are gone.

Moorpark Guy,

I recall reading that the cold hardiest of Mango Professor's new line is the Antonio mango.  Give them a call and see if they have any stock left....I read somewhere they are almost sold out.

You can also try a Timotayo mango, Mango Professor's first cold hardy mango that is grown by La Verne Nursery.  I picked one up recently at Lowes ($50) and it did pretty well during the last cold snap without any protection.

Senior Moorpark - all the advice has been stated.  And I too think it will recover,
but ya never know, so just wait and see....

Did you cover this or not?  Next time I would say it's definitely small enough
(and now that it's been weakened by the cold) to cover it if you get frost
threatened again this winter....

We'll I planted the mango tree to see if it could withstand the cold in that particular area. My haas sustained no damage at all unlike the mango. I believe it suffered the cold damage the two nights last week when the frigid wind was blowing through.
