Any tips for Oahu not in the article Oscar? Heading there mid July.
Thanks!

just got back from oahu. usually i just hit up china town for fresh fruit. mangoes plenty...prefer white piri over all others. beware of vendors just trying to sell you mangoes and other fruits when you inquire how ripe it is.

lychee's were good...and longan was excellent...if you could find it. strangely it was really hard to find. had to go back multiple days to come across it. only one stand with jackfruit.

hah my bugs just arrived.  They are all alive and they started eating mealybugs as soon as dropped them on top of some infested leaves.  Very satisfying to see them get eaten.

where did you get them from? mealybug infestation on my persimmons is such a PIA. i will happily stare at them eating the mealybugs for a good while. haha.

3
i have ants harvesting mealybugs and what not on a persimmon tree. always wanted to try this but persimmon trunk and branches don't have smooth surfaces like citrus. anyone use this on non-smooth bark?

thanks for the WP warren. it was good to meet you and thanks for sharing your knowledge. i'm still amazed by your dense mango planting lol. next time i feel like i don't have enough space, i'll think of you. lol.

i've had my CC for 3 years now. 2 years in ground....on corriente rootstock. it's flowered last year minimally but this year has more flowers than last. not sure if i'll even see fruit as the tree is still on the small-scale. it grows kinda lanky but i had a frame around it to protect from the sun and the branches leaned against them and now they're strong enough to be upright by itself.

my sweet tart is also on corriente with the same time frame but it's larger. same thing. flowers and no fruits.

i just looked at your photos and your trees are much more bigger and older looking than mine. so it looks like i still got a couple of years to go hahaha.

i've had other varieties on turpentine but after 2 years of barely any growth...i dug them out and they seem to do better in pots. i've seen better growth with manila/corriente rootstock in my area for now.

i'm in the 626 so we get alot more heat than culver city.

dr. earth fruit tree fertilizer.

i recently read the back and realized you can use it as a tea (it says to just add to water and let it sit for 24 hours - so different than compost tea).

have a neglected el bumpo in a 5 gallon that produced a few fruits in the SGV.

i'll be planting it in ground in the next week or so.

i was surprise at the unique taste of it so now it's going in ground. :)

supposely the younger leaves can be used for cooking...someone told me if you crush them..it can smell like chicken soup or something. (i tried...not really).

i have one that my parents planted i assume a long time ago....and that's the only reason i still have it around

i'm i socal and it does drop most of its leaves during the winter here though it's suppose to be deciduous.

9
hit me up in the spring and hope i got a space for it! white pirie was the first real mango i got to taste that got me into the mango madness. lol. so it's got a special place for me.

i had 3 mangoes on turpentine (fruit punch, glenn and mallika) in ground for 2 years and they didn't really do much at all. i ended up digging all 3 out and put them in pots and they seem to respond better (healthier looking at least). replaced them with one corriente (sweettart) and two manila roostock (coconut cream/lemon zest) and i've gotten more growth and flowering in 1 year than i ever saw with the turpentine. YMMV but that's my own personal experience.

11
i haven't witness or caught on camera raccoons climbing trees to get fruit but man...do they loooooove to dig up my mulch looking for grubs or bugs. so maybe i lucked out that whatever's in the mulch keeps them busy enough.

i've tried it and it's not the same as just letting it ripe as long as possible on the tree.

yours look to be all red...that's when i usually will pick them before they get super ripe and the birds get to them...soi've left those to just ripen on the counter and that works better for me. you can take some and try that method out too.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocados in containers?

If you are really serious about growing a avocado tree in a pot then I suggest that you look into amaroo boxes sold by urbanboxgardens.com  in Duarte Ca.  The 36 inch box is equivalent to a 125 gallon pot . They hold slightly over 1 yard of soil.

William

have you been recently? any attempts to contact them has resulted in nothing...guess i could drive out there personally to see....

+1 on the Reed. I have one that I planted and it grew 8 ft. in the first year...in a pot.

what feeding regime did you do to get that much growth!

Heh. My "neighbors" up the trail have a very nice pair of avocado trees that make lots and lots of fruit. I never take without asking, so I walked around to the front of the house and introduced myself. Me:
Quote
"Hi! I'm your neighbor from 4 doors down. We moved in last year. I've got the big backyard garden with the pumpkins and corn, etc. I'm having my big corn harvest party on Sunday. Why don't you come by and pick some corn? We also have tomatoes, artichokes, leeks, onions, and a few kinds of squash. I'm wondering if you'd like to trade some vegetables for some of your avocados!"
"Neighbor:"
Quote
"No. We use them all."
Me:

<slack-jawed silence>

I think I've been literally speechless maybe 3-4 times in my life. This was one of them.

haha..this was like a /yesyesyesno
i had to pause and re-read that again...can't imagine it in person.

22
maybe this will help. where did you get your jan boyce? that's one on my list to get.

23
squirrels get to mine before they even hit the ground.
mine do lose their leaves in the winter so you would have some bare looking trees till spring is another consideration.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulch problem - need your help
« on: April 18, 2019, 01:12:38 AM »
just visually speaking..what if you put some like borders around the mulch circles. maybe could make it look "cleaner" and your neighbors might not complain.

you're brave to plant so many trees out front. i've been hesitant about any fruit trees in the front cause it would suck to watch them grow and someone takes them. :P
