Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus Cleft Grafting
« on: March 30, 2016, 03:36:10 AM »
Thanks fruit mentor, I got 2/3 by following your technique/advice for bud grafting.
I think the third one I dropped the severed bud in the soil and completely contaminated its juicy side.

Citrus General Discussion / Compatibility - Orange and Lime

Hi,
Can you graft a tahitian lime onto an orange tree?

I've found two huge trees people are willing to sell cheap and I can then topwork.
For a fingerlime scion would you recommend I get a eureka lemon or a tahitian lime?

I'm guessing the lime is more compatible in general since eureka lemon doesn't like certain rootstocks, but fingerlime is said to be compatible with all the normal trifoliata type rootstocks.

Citrus General Discussion / How to grow this?
« on: March 01, 2016, 08:57:34 PM »
I saw this on facebook grown by the Italian citrus gurus.
I was just wondering how you would produce such a beast? Can you grow a trifoliata rootstock as a big trunk like that, or is it more likely to be an interstock that they've just chopped off and grafted the fingerlime onto the top?

The little ruby is only small, but a real beauty.
Not sure if it's made it through the american customs and everything yet, it's only new here in the nurseries.

The other black skinned reds do seem just as awesome.
Checkout the commercial fingerlime growers 'limecaviarcompany' on instagram
- they have Byron Sunrise it's a seriously good looking fruit.

I think they supply a lot of the flash restaurants around Queensland and New South Wales (Australia).

Would love to see some photos of your crimson tide fruits!
mine is a little young to fruit yet...

Citrus General Discussion / Citrsus deficiency
« on: December 26, 2015, 08:33:30 AM »
Hi,
I have two young (2 year old) eureka lemon trees which each have a different leaf problem.
Just wondering if you guys can help me to workout the best course of action?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Graft rookie - will it grow?
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:56:44 PM »
The bark wasn't really peeling easily so I could only tuck them in at the bottom.
The scion is the elusive "crimson tide" finger lime, it may just be an online scam, i've never actually seen the fruit in real life.
(please post if you have seen one  ::) )

The rootstock is a trifoliata (the bottom of a young purchased Tahitian lime tree from the hardware store)

Citrus General Discussion / Graft rookie - will it grow?

Hi,
I'm patiently awaiting for my graft to sprout, do you think there is any hope?
I've broken the top of the tree as I saw demonstrated in a youtube video (to try and break apical dominance and force the bud to shoot)

Thanks Fyliu,

Are there any easy ways to pick trifoliata vs troyer citrange from the look of the bark?
I grabbed two that had suckers growing which were obviously trifoliata or a variety of it from the leaf shape.
None of the stores around here mark what the rootstock is, and the 14 year olds working there have no idea.

The blood lime is very cool. Great purple blossoms and very interesting fruits.

Citrus General Discussion / No rootstock solution

My friend has some really cool citrus trees just right for taking budwood right now. Noone sells rootstock in my city and I haven't grown any. Could I get a cheap grafted tree from the local nursery and regraft onto the rootstock? I would then cut off the original graft once I get it going?

The seedlings are way harder to grow than normal lemons or limes.
You'll want them as fresh as possible, chill them in fridge, then keep moist and around 29 degrees on a heat mat or warm location.
I got heaps sprouted eventually, but they all got stem rot and died.

When I sprout more I will;
1. make very sure they aren't damp overnight, water only in the morning and put in gentle sun.
2. maybe not use coco peat seedling starters, make something that holds a bit of moisture but lets more air around them.

Any tips from the pros would also be helpful for me!

Citrus General Discussion / Finger limes - Jali red vs little ruby
« on: September 21, 2015, 03:09:53 AM »
Hi,
Does anyone know if the Jali red fingerlime is the same as little ruby?
I've bought both, because I think the Jali red is a bigger one.

They both have green skin and a red centre from the pictures that I have seen.

I find it interesting that rainforest pearl gets such a bad rap, yet they sell out the Pemberton, Western Australia ones at big prices in Perth.
Maybe they grow tastier in the cool of Pemby than QLD/NSW where the other varieties are so much better.

I also noticed that on the Pemberton finger limes facebook page they are producing a range of colours with Green/Clear/Pink/Red insides, the skin also varies Black/Brown/Red.
(don't know how to post photos here, but they have a great one on facebook)

As far as I've read all of their trees are rainforest pearl grafted trees, and they put it down to variations in the soil and microclimate.

Citrus General Discussion / Finger limes from seed
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:00:52 AM »
Hi,
It seems like the only way to get the finger lime types I'd like to grow in WA is sprouting seeds. Would you recommend any tips for keeping them alive? All my other trees are grafted so very easy for monkeys like me to not kill them.

Wow,
I was stoked just to get a Judy's ever bearing and a red centre lime. I had no idea those amazing other types existed.thanks  Starling great post.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Citrus Glauca
« on: July 14, 2015, 09:02:43 AM »
Thanks Millet. I'll test the pH tomorrow, what pH would a brand name citrus soil from the shops have do you reckon? And if it's too high, is there a way to gently bring it down without repotting again?

**just found this**
If anyone is interested this is an interesting tree with some wild adaptations.
I found this website of a guy growing hundreds of them in emerald, he has a detailed paper on the trees explaining everything, quite a good read,

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus Glauca
« on: July 12, 2015, 11:27:01 PM »
Hi,
I recently purchased a grafted citrus glauca. (Australian bush lime)
Given it's grafted I just put it in a quality citrus potting mix, I assume the rootstock is similar to what my Eureka has as rootstock.

Does anyone have tips and knowledge on these ones?
I've read about it being native to some pretty ruthless desert environments, so it should be pretty tolerant of the occasional 40 degree Perth Scorcher.

Thanks,

Actually I just checked the rootstock used is Troyer Citrange.
