Very interesting, Har. I guess the Reineke is also known as "Merida," which was written about favorably in an old FSHS article: http://fshs.org/proceedings-o/1988-vol-101/245-246%20(CAMPBELL).pdf

I have never tasted a black zapote that had anything to do with chocolate! But I like them. Sure there is variation in fruit quality. I have one grafted tree (cultivar?) that produces small but tasty fruit. The taste reminds me a lot of dates :-)

Hola Felipe, how old is your tree? It looks so small and yet bearing fruits already?

Mine is starting to bud first year, but it's still really small too.. hopefully I can try a fruit by the end of this year.. when do they usually flower and fruit? wow, you guys have so much extra land to plant with.. just from that picture I see places for more trees already..

If the soil is sandy, fertilization may increase sweetness.  Have you applied gypsum (made a big difference for my tree) and mixed fertilizer with high potassium and Boron?

If the fruit was eaten in the still-greenish-firm-stage shown in the second picture, it was still not fully ripe or fully sweet.  It must be mushy soft, almost impossible to pick up without puncturing the skin with one's fingers, and the pulp should be black, not brownish-black.

I really like black sapote.  The consistency reminds me a lot of durian.  Not nearly as much flavor or sweetness as a durian, but very nice.

We have been harvesting the most delicious USDA Certified Organic Bernecker fruit.  We only put in 9 trees of the chocolate pudding fruit, Reneike, Bernecker and Black Beauty.  I never thought I would be writing about how amazing the fruit tastes.  Sweet, creamy  deliciousness.  I will definitely be adding more of these trees.

The most bland fruit I have ever tasted have been dragonfruit. Some dragonfruit I have tried have literally tasted of pulp and nothing. The worst chocolate pudding fruit I have had has had more taste than the worst dragonfruit I have had. And I say that as a fan and collector of dragonfruit.

I've only eaten 2 black sapote.
Both allowed to get super-ripe. First one was decent with mild sweetness and chocolatiness. The second tasted like air. So, go figure.
The texture is fun - i'd try em again.

I agree that in my limited experience dragon fruit is very bland.

Just out of curiosity but anyone with a digital Brix scale measure a black sapote, what is sugar content in comparison to other fruits?

Thanks

Joe

I just got to try a few black sapote fruit, from brown to squishy nearly rotten black inside.  They texture was much better than I expected.  The less ripe one had texture like mamey sapote.  The really squishy one was still not as soft as actual chocolate pudding, but definitely had a chocolate taste and some sweetness but not much.  I agree it is pretty bland, and I personally wouldnt recommend it as something worth growing unless I had excess space.  I will try a few more if I get the opportunity.

Tastes and texture is nothing like fuyu or haitcha(?) persimmon

I also used to find Black Sapote fruit mediocre at best.  Knowing how the fruit is grown and timing for picking is extremely important for fruit quality.  Our fruit is delicious with a jello like texture, great flavor and perfect sweetness.  They are now one of my favorite fruits and we are planting more.  If your buying and into healthy good quality food a traceable provenance from seed to fruit does matters.

Okay so I just had a few more of these and they are starting to grow on me :).

The texture is fantastic and the flavor is good if not strong.  I think the chocalate flavor is actually an illusion because the fruit looks like chocolate... I bet if you ate it blind you wouldnt say it tastes like cocoa.

Had a Reineke from John Painter that was like a sweet chocalate mousse, ridiculously good. I'm concerned why Adam knows what Stale Natural Ice beer smells like...that is not a scent a human should ever have to tolerate :P
