Possibly something in the Rubiaceae, coffee family.   Such as Alibertia genus?

I think it is gustavia. Possibly Gustavia superba:

A truly remarkable looking fruit Oscar. Have you ever eaten it?

Ate some, but was over ripe, so don't have good idea of taste. Can tell you though that flowers are very beautiful and fragrant. Worth growing for the flowers alone.

Starling, it grows as a street tree in Cairns and is disturbingly good looking. I didn't think they were edible out of hand, but were cooked with rice?

Is it native?

No. All gustavia species are from central and south America.
To Har, if it is this plant it's not in coffee family, Rubiaceae, it is in Lecythidaceae, Brazil nut family.

The picture shows opposite leaves.

Lecythidaceae have alternate leaves.

Yes gustavia leaves are alternate. Not clear to me from Luc's photo that those leaves are opposite? Fruit indentation at bottom of fruit looks like gustavia.

Yes there are street trees around in my town and I thought they must be pretty common and nothing special.

In the middle of the photo, the tip of one twig is clearly visible.

Yes, looks like opposite leaves. Gustavia also look different in fruit have a cap on the end rather than an indented end. Like gum nuts before they seed or like Bolwarra.
