fruit split
« on: August 13, 2020, 01:18:24 PM »
I keep finding split mandarins on my in-ground greenhouse trees.  Only a small percentage of the crop, but enough I think it is a sign something needs correction.  Am I right that this is caused by drought stress followed by watering?  My trees are on drip irrigation that turns on for an hour every 3-4 days.  I just guessed, maybe it isn't quite enough.  The trees have never showed any sign of wilting so I figured it was good.

It is caused by the tree taking up water faster than the peel can expand.

I am increasing my automatic-irrigation frequency a bit until summer is over.

Also, it seems the split fruits are far enough along they are still tasty, even if a bit sour.  So not much is wasted if I catch them before they spoil
