ISO Chilean Guava, Pitangatuba, Achacha, Olosapo
« on: September 01, 2020, 03:47:03 PM »
Hey everyone!

I'm new to the site and have been growing tropical fruits from seed for about a year now, indoors in zone 6, WV USA. I'm looking for a few varieties to add to my collection:

Chilean Guava
Pitangatuba
Achacha (or a similar variety)
Olosapo

I prefer to grow from seed but would consider seedlings depending on cost. Does anyone know where I could get these?

Thanks!

Wanderlust Nursery has Chilean Guava seeds listed but they're currently out of stock. One Green World lists named varieties, but no seeds.

Pitangatuba is common among collectors here. Someone should be able to help you with this one.

Achacha is uncommon. A local specialty fruit market in Houston, TX - Linda's Tropical Fruits - got a limited quantity shipment of the fruit (six bags of 2lbs or so) during the summer of 2019. I was lucky to get a hold of a bag, but regret not saving the seeds. No telling if they were viable or not. I know of someone else who found an international market carrying them in New England, but do not know the details. So know they make it stateside once in a blue moon if you can't get a hold of seeds or seedling from a collector.

Olosapo is rare to show up in trades. I'd like a seedling myself.

Thanks! So far, I've been able to find a variety very similar to Achacha and Pitangatuba. Still going to keep looking for Chilean Guava for sure!

After a long search, I finally purchased a Chilean Guava off of Etsy last year. It's doing well. They're still on there for $20 and $40 + shipping.

Visited a house to buy something a few weeks ago and there was a big heavily fruiting olosapo tree in the yard about say 40 years old. I couldn't find one fruit on the ground. A couple of months ago found a frui beneath a tree in a local park and it had one big seed.

Just a case of different stuff in different areas I guess. I hate to take the thread off track but my brother and I did a little urban foraging this morning during the lowest point of the fruiting calendar. All we got were some black sapotes from a roadside tree.

I don't have Cash app, but I have venmo and paypal. I'll likely wait until next year for the Achacha though at this rate since I've spent so much on seeds already. If I found one for under 30 with shipping, sure, but I don't expect to since it's so rare.

Here’s a tip, if someone’s asking for your “budget” they’re trying to make as much money as they can off you. Never tell someone your budget. They’re the seller, they should have a price for YOU. Now he’ll charge you $29.99 for that achacha. Hate to see people taken advantage of.

Well, I saw that he listed it in another topic for 60 dollars so I knew I wasn't getting close anyways.

Matt from Wanderlust Nursery here! We have tons of Chilean Guava plants available for sale right now, in one gallon pots. Some are even fruiting! If you're specifically looking for seeds, we're just getting some fruit to ripen now, so we can throw some up onto the website.

Wanderlust Nursery has Chilean Guava seeds listed but they're currently out of stock. One Green World lists named varieties, but no seeds.

Since wanderlust nursery is mentioned in this thread just wanted to do a shout out to them. I ordered from them a while ago and the plants were absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend them. Only issue I had was communication. They do reply sometimes but in many cases didn't quickly or at all. Realize they are likely busy people so no real worries. Otherwise fantastic experience with them.
Trying to grow it all!

Thanks D-Grower! We appreciate the kind words. Unfortunately, you're right on communication; we do have a hard time keeping up with messages at times. Correspondence by email or phone is by far the easiest way to get a hold of us and we're committed to responding to emails at info@wanderlustnursery.com within 24 hours. We simply have a terrible time keeping up with messages on TFF, PalmTalk, and other forums as well as Facebook, email, and phone. Call us old fashioned!

Thanks Acoalwell, you probably have received your seeds by now. Let us know if you have any questions; your seeds were cleaned from fresh fruit this month and should germinate relatively quickly. Just in case you were curious, the seeds you've received are a white/pink skinned fruit selection that's an early season selection. Unfortunately, the name of the cultivar is long lost, but the leaves are more willow shaped as opposed to our selection 'Jim Gerdemann', which has very round leaves and bright red, late season fruit.
