Your silas looks way better then two of mine that I have been meaning to prune.
You probably should cut the top off and all the longest branches cut around 12"
off. It will bush out and the long branches would snap anyway if fruit developed
out there? I pruned one of my three and it is starting to really look better. The
best looking sapodillas I have are two I grew from seed and I topped them early and now
they have nice round canopies. I am always afraid to prune and in the end
I am glad I did. By the way your trees look great!
-
thanks! i'm going to follow your advice and do some pruning. For some reason, I am afraid to prune trees/branches that look healthy. Silly, I know.
the SW has a few fruit on it now. so going to wait until they are done to cut. Or does it matter?
-
Nice collection! How many seashore mangosteen do you have? Wouldn't you need separate trees?
-
thanks Anisha! Seashore mangosteen is dioecious from what I can tell, and I have some smaller ones in pots. So hopefully it will work out. Will even squeeze another in the ground nearby it if turns out to be good. Its an experiment in foliage and flavors.
Could g. hombriana be cross pollinated with other flowering garcinias?

Mike at TreesNMore (Palm City area) hooked me up with the Kesar (at a good price), and a few of those pictured (lemon drop, seashore, abiu, coconut cream). Pretty sure he does not ship trees. Wish he did. Worth the drive for me, might be a stretch for you.

LOVE the photos! Do you garden organically, or add chemical fertilizers etc? Do you supplement the poor SFL soil? Supplement with water?
You say how long the trees were in-ground, but what size were they when planted?
Also, yes, the sources of your trees is always appreciated info!
-
Thanks alot LP and everyone else!
I mostly grow organic, but do use some synthetic fertilizers. Fox Farms Ocean Forest and Happy Frog soils are my favorite soil mixes, mixed with backyard dirt, vermiculite, perlite, kitchen compost, worm castings, worms, charcoal, ash, and mycorrhizal amendments. Sometimes use whatever is at HD (Dr. Earth, miracle grow cactus, citrus and palm soil). Over time, a mix of Neptunes fish emulsion, bat guano, worm castings, Osmocote, Diamond fertilizer (ph balanced for my area), charcoal, and wood ash have been sprinkled around the trees, and then covered with pine bark mulch.
No synthetic pesticides, no herbicides. All organic when it comes to pest control. I would rather stomp on grasshoppers than spray my fruits and veggies with pesticide. Because my trees are mostly small, it is easy to care for them. Have sprayed (with the water hose) scales off the soursop tree so many times they seem to have given up for a while. A mix of neem oil, lavender, tea tree, and a few other oils and soapy water goes a long way as well.
In addition to a sprinkler system with well water and getting lots of rain, I water a lot. Makes me happy spraying plants with water, always has. Probably should talk to someone about that.
When planted, many of the trees were around 3 to 5 feet, in 3 to 7 gallon pots. The Glenn was bought from PIN as a 15 gallon plant. It was the only Glenn tree (in May) for sale with no fruit on it. But it had a bunch of branches, and the others were straight up with a branch or 2. It paid off, it grew out rather than bearing fruit, and the following year produced a nice little crop of tasty fiberless mangoes. The large jabo came from a landscaper who has his own nursery. It came in a large pot, at least 25 gallons, and was about 6-7 feet when planted. When asked what variety of jabo it was, he answered, "its a jaboticaba."
Many of the trees/plants are from PIN: (ceylon cinnamon, Glenn, Silas Woods sap, yellow cacao, Gefner atemoya, miracle fruit, jujube, Panama Red passion fruit, goji, American Beauty and Purple Haze dragon fruits, etc.), TOP: (Alano sap, rollinia, soursop, pineapple annona, Sabara jabo, jasmines, aphelandras, neem, jujube, etc.), and the aforementioned from TreesNMore. Also have grown some stuff from seeds and picked up some plants off eBay (acai palm and coconut) and from other online sellers, forum members, and local sellers. Couple of the plants (nam doc mai #4) came from Fairchild. Plant buddy at work has given me black sapote, peanut butter tree, curry tree, soursop, opossum purple passion fruit, and vanilla orchid.

I'm not seeing the pics that were posted in this thread, anyone know what is up?
-
Seashore mangosteen can still set some fruit on their own but smaller fruit than usual and without fully developed seed. I know of one lone tree (female?) that does this in Naples FL.
-
Your coco cream could use some pruning, branches are too long and may result in weak branches. Coco cream as is snaps easily. recommendation is to not let any branch get longer than 12 inches.
-
Beautiful plants and fruits!
Simon
-
That is good news DWFL, really looking forward to trying seashore mangosteen and would prefer to grow just one tree if possible. Considering grafting male scions on my tree, if it turns out to be female, or vice-versa.
Thank you for the advice BG. Will do, but I want to see if she flowers this season or not first. Probably wouldn't let the fruit hold, but might leave one or 2 on it if cannot help myself. Also thinking of staking any branch with fruit on it, and pruning afterwards. As there are no flowers yet, might just be wishful thinking.

Thank you Simon. Coming from you that means a lot! =)

Beautiful garden and such healthy looking trees. Where did you get the yellow dragonfruit?
-
Thanks Pasca. I picked up the yellow dragon fruit from TopTropicals a while back when they had a $5 sale. I think it is the real deal, but who knows. One flower so far, and it dropped without pollination. Going to graft giant yellow Peruvian dragonfruit on it when my sprouts get big enough, along with a cutting of orange dragon fruit. Will post updated pics of it soon, dug up and potted it (and the others), they are really starting to take off now.
-
Some updates from the garden:
Flowering jabo, still unsure what variety. My old landscaper has his own private nursery, sold me a large tree. In ground about 3 years now. 2nd time fruiting.

Your yard must have a really ideal micro climate.
Thank you mucho! I water and irrigate a lot, maybe too much. The fence and high shrub wall insulates quite a bit from wind. Beyond that, our weather is usually nice for most tropicals and subtropicals. Only a few plants struggle here. Not sure the abiu is going to make it to fruiting, but everything else seems pretty happy.
Planning on building a pond this summer, which should add to our humidity and hopefully help during cold/hot/dry spells.
-
Yes, I like to echo everyone too; beautiful photos, and healthy and varied choiced trees collection you have! You must have green thumbs! Congratulations!
Looking at your sapodilla, reminded me that I still think it's a good front yard tree: the elegant looks, easy maintenance, less prone to diseases and not too many people recognize it's brown but delicious fruits! :D
-
Thanks Sam, I love growing plants, and they tend to be forgiving with me for some reason.
Agree, sapodilla is a beautiful tree that usually is overlooked by fruit bandits. However, there are a few large trees down the street, and have seen a guy pulled over on the side of the road, and then later climbing the trees to nab fruit. Not as prolific as the mango bandits, but they are out there.
-
Wanted to send out a big "Thank You!" to Brandon aka cbss_daviefl for hooking me up yesterday. Beautiful private backyard "nursery" with a ton of tropical fruit trees. Got a tour of the grounds and learned a bit. Well worth the drive.

(https://s17.postimg.cc/w7tlnlix7/jaboredsprouts_22018.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/w7tlnlix7/)
Also picked up a few Maha Chanok scions, added to nam doc mai 4. Think I overdid it with the buddy tape, lol.
(https://s17.postimg.cc/ug0msrcfv/Maha_Cha_Scion22018.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/ug0msrcfv/)
Also acquired some dream atemoya scions, added to Gefner last night. And my friend got a beautiful angie mango to replace the one that Irma took out.
-
I was great to meet the two of you!
The sprouts are part of the mother plant. I have never seen these branches grow much bigger than 6 - 8 inches. I have seen them flower rarely. I don't remember if they fruited or not. My guess is that it would be better to trim them off if they will never get sun.

Woohoo! Thank you Chris. Very good news indeed. Have yet to try ON, but have heard good things about it when grown in this area.
-
Hello everybody.
I could use some help identifying these 2 small trees. One should be black sapote, the other purple caimito grown from a seed from PIN. The marker on one of the tags is unreadable, and the other one disappeared in all the mayhem and confusion associated with hurricane Irma. Thought looking on the bottom of the leaves would clarify, but they look so similar. I am left uncertain. Please share your impressions.
I think the one on left, with larger leaves, is the black sapote, and the one on the right is caimito.

I would say those are both caimito. Black sapote leaves are waxy and the bottoms are a lighter shade of green than the dark green tops. The leaves are generally flat and caimito's have ribbing. Caimito leaf bottoms have distinctly different coloring from the tops. The new growth on the larger specimen also looks like caimito. I am not the best at recognizing foliage though.

Thanks for your appraisal.
So you think they're both caimito? Its certainly possible, but they have to be different cultivars. I was thrown off when realized they both looked bronze on the underside of the leaves. The smaller one is more pronounced bronze to me.
Both trees were neglected for quite a while, needed repotting, a bit dry, with some scale on the leaves. Think they will bounce back nicely with new pots and a lil care.
Anything else anyone can think of that looks a lot like caimito?
-
Yeah, I was thinking the same. Not sure which variety(ies) of chrysophyllum they are but the morphology is pointing in that direction. I guess we will find out soon. Good luck- Chris

Okay, thanks! That makes sense, never thought that black sapote and caimito were that similar before, so was surprised to find myself uncertain as to which was which. Going to do some grafting on these puppies and the much larger in-ground tree that is growing well but has yet to flower. Thinking DPI Gold and Juicy Pearl.

Some big ants on them. Any chance they are pollinators or should I blast em with the hose?
-
I think the ants are farming those smaller black bugs, aphids. Hose them off.
-
Dang, you are correct Brandon. They were more obvious in the morning sun. Hosed away the ants and aphids, rinse, and repeat. Had to be careful to find the right setting and pressure that gets the bugs but doesn't damage the flowers.
This tree has been largely just left on its own. Gets some of the well fed sprinkler, occasional watering from me, and has been fertilized maybe once in 2 years. Kind of surprised it is flowering.
-
Dream annona graft appears to be taking (on gefner), pushing some growth. A few of the scions are looking similarly.

I wait for fruit drop

Just picked a nice rollinia/biriba (yesterday). Have yet to try fruit from this tree. Have eaten what I think was frozen rollinia before, and it was good. Excited to finally try fresh, and get an idea if the fruit I'm growing is any good.
Does rollinia need to be totally yellow to eat? Picked on yesterday, and it is almost completely yellow with a few green streaks remaining. Should I wait till all yellow?

Nice! I would wait until it is fully yellow. I have tried a couple with similar coloring and they tasted green. Winter fruit from my trees are generally not as good as summer fruit and can be bland.
-
Thanks Brandon. The fruit was good, but yeah, a little bland. Definitely worth eating. It was a bit snotty in places, so my daughter and I ate a bit and froze the rest for smoothies.
Have another nearly ripe fruit on the tree, still a few flowers, and several small fruits that recently set. Seems to be pollinating better now. I did not do any hand pollination on the recent fruits/flowers.

Best to eat them before they get fully yellow (similar to your second picture rather than the one I quoted). They have a more complex flavor and not nearly as "snotty".
-
Thanks for sharing your awesome garden! You have a beautiful lush piece of land there buddy. Congrats
-
Thanks for the advice dwfl. There are a few small fruit on the tree, and another round of flowers popping up. Need to try some more hand pollination. Can't wait to sample more fruit!
Thank you for the kind words Lionking. It's funny, because our soil is thin and rocky, lots of limestone. When I plant trees, always add a mix of garden soil and amendments, but it is hard to make a decent sized hole. Sometimes I pay my landscaper to bust it up with his pick axe. Aint easy shoveling rocks. Feel fortunate that most everything grows as well as it does. Abiu and araza are the only ones that have really struggled.

My mango bowl nearly floweth over... Have harvested about 70 now. 3rd season this tree has produced, and still a bit more fruit on the tree. Last one was 15 oz.

I thought the squirrels were getting smart to the mangoes lately, and then spotted a large giant Cuban Knight anole in the tree. Does anyone know of these lizards eating mangoes? I've heard of them eating annona flowers, and one likes to chill in the rollinia tree. Makes me nervous. Close inspection of the bites on this mango, looks to be a one toothed squirrel in some places. Or could it be the snout marks of a mango lovin' lizard?

Hey Canvo. It was listed as a grafted Corrongo caimito from Top Tropicals. As such, who knows if it is actually grafted or of specified variety.
Bought as a 3 gal, and planted in ground 2.5 years ago. It's over 10 feet tall now.

I would let it get fully ripen on the tree until it is all dark purple. After the fruits are harvested they can last some time. Even if the outside gets shriveled a little, they are still good tasting.
-
Thanks JY!
Just checked the caimito, and the ripest fruit is about 70% purple. Going to watch and wait.
The borojoa plants were from 7 heads off eBay. I had 3, lost one, and one of the 2 left is not looking so good. Haven't really given them the attention they need.

Let them really get ripen, get softly firm to the touch. They taste better.
Also, warning, the skin has lots of resin. I usually cut then in half and use the spoon to scoop the inside leaving skin untouched. But you probably know that. Lol

Getting better on the caimito ripening thing. Leaving the last ones on the tree longer, as they are sweeter when allowed to wrinkle some.

There are 2 passion vines growing on this pongan tree. The leafy one evident at the lower parts of the tree is passiflora nitida. Has flowered, but still no fruits. The other vine is a seedling from a Panama Red vine that landscapers killed. I couldn't see any leaves until most of the pongan tree leaves dropped.

Good looking Guanabanas, so did you have to hand pollinate or let nature take care, also how many guanabana trees you have in the orchard, i know normally they are very shy bearers.
My two trees are only 1-2 year old and grow tall like crazy, 12ft tall, no fruit yet, just flowers.
-
Thanks Marius.
Only one guanabana tree. Held about 6 fruit this time. I tried hand pollinating, but was doing it wrong (wasn't catching the pollen soon enough). Have since figured it out.
The fruit that formed were mostly high up (8 feet or so), beyond the height of where I hand pollinated. So it happened naturally.
Plan on getting more fruits next time, as will hand pollinate like crazy.
This tree has been fruiting for a couple of years now, but only a few at a time. Was about 4 feet and in a 3 gallon pot when planted in ground back in 2016.
-
Finally got my mangosteen in ground. Had to jackhammer a hole through solid limestone. Over 2 feet deep and 4+ feet in diameter. Lined hole and painted with Mikrokote.

Tree was in a root saver pot. Check out the nice fibrous root system.
(https://i.postimg.cc/PCSXCDfF/mangosteen-roots-2019.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PCSXCDfF)
Added ton of sand and topsoil to the bottom layer, with peat and biochar. Added organic soil with perlite and biochar to the top layers. Built a mound, which is secured with root saver pots attached to each other. Hoping this will suffice to keep the roots happy and out of alkaline soil.

Rob did you harvest the sweetheart bananas yet?
-
Hey Brad.
Yes, trying to dig up a pic, think my wife has it on her phone. Got a nice bunch. Thieves nabbed the other, too early and a waste.
Nanners were real good. Great flavor and big. Still got a few in the freezer for smoothies, didn't let any go to waste.
3 nice plants have sprung up. Training them away from the fence this time.

Purple mangosteen appears to have handled 38F overnight on Tues, with 20mph+ winds. Had a sprinkler on it all night. 40's on Weds, no sprinkler. Some of the larger leaves were already damaged from drying out when still in a pot, so really looks no worse since the cold hit. There is new growth, but it has slowed/halted with the cold weather.

Rob, cool pics. G. aristata is almost like a native tree here. Planted one a couple years ago and havent watered or fertilized it once and its growing well. Eventually they do get big. ECHO has a large fruiting tree near their main building if you ever get a chance to go there. Not much to write home about in flavor but incredibly productive.
A similar tree is G. portoricensis. Leaves still have spikes on the ends on this species but are slightly larger and more rounded. Fruit similar to G. aristata but more floral in taste. Haven't seen the new growth on either of these species affected by cold here. Just took a couple pics:

Thanks Dwfl! Those are nice. Would like to try g. porto!
Will take a pic of my aristata and post. It's in ground and seems to be getting ready to bust out.
Here is g. mangostana getting happy again. Had a rough winter, having just been planted in ground and then cooler temps hitting. Lots of the leaves were burnt at the ends, and I was worried about recovery. Well, lots of new growth popping, and she's looking happy despite the very hot weather and lack of rain. Have been watering like crazy.

Thanks Brad! How is spring going in your orchard?
All of a sudden the mangosteen is growing like crazy. Makes me happy
-
We had a long cold wet winter here in southern CA. The sun just hasnt been out much yet and things are going slower than normal. The weeds are growing like crazy, does that count?
-

Looks like it pushed out of that little funk nicely Rob. Ready for blast off this wet season! Pretty much anything nasty below 40 degrees seems to give them those burnt ends. Doesn't seem to outright kill them though as long as they're not on deaths door already as the nasty conditons dont last very long. Mine did the same.
-
Weeds definitely count Brad!
Thanks for sharing your experience Dwfl. Was wondering if the mistimed planting was the cause, as well as it getting too dry once or twice.
Now, trying to keep it from getting fried by this brutal spring sun. Not much rain here for a while, then a couple of nice rains lately.
-
Nice and big collection of fruit trees in this forum.
-
Thanks Nut!
Noticed something interesting the other day; underneath the rollinia tree I left an old compost bin with the bottom open. Never spread it around, just left in that one spot and focused on other stuff. It's been 6 months or more sitting there. Just realized that the tree is holding fruit only on the side where the combost is. Most of the tree flowered, certainly all around the tree, but fruit only held on the side where the roots would get fed. Only other explanation is that side gets a little more sun, but I think the extra nutrients are what did it. Fits with what Cookie and Har have mentioned about feeding annonas to get good fruiting.
(https://i.postimg.cc/bZfBMWtG/Rollinia-Fruit-Compost62020.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bZfBMWtG)
If you zoom in on the pic, can see several fruits. The rest of the tree has no fruit.
-
How do you like the Rollinia and how does it taste? Thinking about buying one.
-
Hi Saone.
Rollinia tastes good (lemon vanilla taste, not too sweet, little sour), but the texture can be mushy. I usually takes the seeds out and freeze to mix into smoothies, juices, etc.
-
Thanks for the reply. Does it grow many fruits or not so prolific? And what are your favorite fruit trees?
-
You are most welcome Andrew.
The tree has required trimming to keep it from getting too tall. It is about 9 feet, was over 15 feet tall when it was cut about a year ago. Basically forms a nice little canopy.
It was planted in ground, from a 3 gallon tree, in early 2016.
After taking a couple of years to get going, it now produces a few dozen+ fruit per year. 2 crops, winter and summer.
Fertilization seems to help with flowering and fruit set/hold.
My favorite fruits and fruit trees are mangoes. So many varieties, they are like different fruits entirely sometimes. Nothing else comes close.
I do like mulberries a lot, mangosteen, pineapple, and passionfruits.
Jabos are among my favorite trees to grow. Beautiful, weird, and tasty. Carambola is also beautiful. Other than those, really like growing different garcinias.
I also grow and eat a lot of peppers. From a few sweet ones, to the moderately hot. While some heat is good, looking for flavor more than scorch.
-
Thanks for the info. Been watching tons of videos of Florida and Fruit farms and what not on youtube and seems like so many interesting varieties. I am in Vietnam and there are lots of mangos, but not much variety in my area. Looking to get a few different types of Jabos, they look interesting and are not in my area.

Wish I lived in a tropical climate and had all those fruit trees ......hahah dreams...all your plants look very good to me !
-
Thanks Plantinyum. I used to live in colder climates, and longed for warm weather and tropical tastes. It's nice, I feel really lucky to be able to grow all this stuff in my yard. And so many great growers around me.
Just picked up this sweet 7g Sweet Tart from Squam. Had to do it. Planting in-ground tomorrow, near fence with neighbor. Don't have space for a large tree, but going to trim 1 - 2 x per year, and use budwood to top work part of my ndm4 and maybe a branch or 2 on the Glenn. If it proves controllable, will keep the main tree in that spot.

How big is your property, Rob? Your photos always look great.
-
Thanks John! I'm usually outside alone in the garden, amazed by something probably insignificant to most, but know that many people here will get it.
House is on a .40 acre lot with a pool. Good sized yard for the neighborhood.
The front is mostly ornamentals. The back is a mix.
Into bromeliads and orchids too.
Trying to create a natural and peaceful environment that is also tasty and promotes health.
I'm packing stuff in, and left a bit of grass so the kids can run around and throw frisbee.
Had planned on putting in a pond when pandemic hit. Turned the area into a vegetable garden, which is now mostly red amaranth wheat, assorted peppers, pigeon peas, turmerics, and a few others. Will eventually put a pond in.

We paid a lot to clear the jungle that existed upon moving in. Tons of orchid trees, an ancient cado tree (never got to try one, but the hood of my car did), bottle brush, and all kinds of stuff. Then added our jungle.

Chowghat Orange Dwarf Coconut
It is an early flowering variety, taking between 3 and 4 years to begin flowering and subsequently bearing fruit. The coconuts produced by this tree are round with orange skin. ... The tree itself typically grows to 16 feet in height and has an average expected lifespan of 50 years.

Wow plenty going on in your patch. You can use your blue butterfly pea in clear alcohol, water, rice and mash potato as well as tea. Lemon basil and hot basil are two other thai basils to have a crack at.
-
Thanks Mike! I will check out those uses. Looking forward to blue rice.
Now I have 2 more basils to hunt down.
-
I zinged through and looked at the pics and no doesn't look like achachairu, leave rollinia on the tree longer for a better taste and same with starapples. Looks like you chose your dwarf coconuts well because many get tall but stay skinny (eg malay gold). Looks like a lot of trees poised to do their thing in a year or two. Looks like a happening place.
-
Is the soursop a Cuban fibreless (should be Cuban fiber)? The giant passionfruit flesh is a bit like very mild honeydew and passionfruit pulp over it really makes it more enjoyable.
-
What do you think that tree is if not achachairu, Mike?
Soursop is supposedly Homestead variety, but it was from TopTropicals, who are notorious for mislabeling. Lots of flowers and small fruit now. Its very good, with a little sour. Has some fiber, but not bad.
I agree on Rollinia. Picked early to try and get firmer flesh, but suffered flavor-wise.
Still learning star apples. Need to graft some goodies on that one.

Rob I zoomed through the posts here and just answered a questions posed on whether a plant looked like achachairu. Soursop is likely to be Cuban fibreless or similar then. The small purple star apples people call Haitian seem to dominate everywhere. I know it can be hard to find the ones that are bigger, sweeter or that have less latex.

Your broms get full sun?
Full sun, part of the day, for the ones on the front line. But some of them are begging for more shade, like Snake Charmer and Wild Ace. Others seem to love it.
Others are in bright light, no full sun at all. The luthera splendide marginata, vrieseas, marmota, tillandsias, and others are all protected.
..got some different chanterinnis doing well underneath canary palms, receiving heavy sun part of the day.

Thanks Eddie! I buy a tree or plant every time wife and I get into an argument. Started off with just a Chia Pet a few years ago, now look at us.
Purple mangosteen still looking good after 3 nights in the 40's. Got as low as 45F last night. Weird, seems like it was recorded as being warmer north of here. Would think my area would be warmer rather than colder. Actually about 15 miles south of downtown Miami.

Every time you update pictures of your mangosteen I get hopeful that I can recover mine. Is yours growing in total shade with no direct sunlight?
-
Looks good! I enjoy seeing the progress of this experiment.
Broward seems to stay a little warmer than your area for some reason. Usually 40s seem to be ok for mangosteen. I did have a 5 ft mangosteen in a pot die during winter when small 3 gals were untouched. Maybe it was unrelated to weather. If the forecast is for 40 or below, I will bring in my mangosteen and button mangosteen. This is a back-breaking exercise as some are in 20 gal pots.
Are you planning to protect the tree if it gets into the 30s or are you going to test the limits?
-

Glad I can share some hope!
It gets direct sunlight, but is also protected by some trees around it. Nothing too tall or thick though, so gets several hours direct and a bit filtered as well. The surrounding trees help subdue the wind, and probably keep it a bit more humid.

If the forecast is for 40 or below, I will bring in my mangosteen and button mangosteen. This is a back-breaking exercise as some are in 20 gal pots.
Are you planning to protect the tree if it gets into the 30s or are you going to test the limits?
Thanks Brandon! It's more fun now that the tree is getting bigger and established.
I believe it has experienced a low of about 38F, but some of the leaves were burnt as a result.
When it gets to 40F or below, I put a sprinkler on it overnight.

Rob,
I am curious about that pineapple annona.. Did you buy it grafted or was it a seedling? Is it worth growing in your opinion?
-
Rob,

I don't know if it's worth growing.
It fruited only once for me, and got to the fruit too late. Smelled and looked good. Was tempted to fight the ants for a nibble, but wimped out.
Growing in a large rootsaver pot. It grew roots through the bottom grid, and is securely attached to the ground. Not ideal, and I have not added dirt, fertilized, or watered much. It is certainly tough and easy to grow, seems hard to kill in fact.
I'm going to add some dirt around it and fertilize and see if can get some fruit going soon.
Too curious to get rid of it yet, but could not recommend choosing this over a proven cultivar unless you are really into annonas and would be willing to use for rootstock if it is not to your liking.
-
Thanks Eddie!

Glad I can share some hope!
It gets direct sunlight, but is also protected by some trees around it. Nothing too tall or thick though, so gets several hours direct and a bit filtered as well. The surrounding trees help subdue the wind, and probably keep it a bit more humid.
Thanks! Mine has no other plants around it so I protected it with an enclosure, which increased the humidity, and it seems to be a little happier.
-
hopefully one day the purple mangosteen would fruit! that would make history as bill whitmans only produced one fruit...
keep taking care of it and others! ;D :D
-
Incorrect. As of 1992, Bill Whitman had two mangosteen trees that were fruiting.

The mangosteen trees at Fairchild were holding dozens of fruit, a couple of years ago. Heard they are no longer there.

Thank you Simon. Pics look a bit better than the overall scene right now. Got some trimming and greening up to do, it's been dry lately.

Great thread, roblack! How tall is the Jackfruit seedling? Was the seed from a particular variety? Thanks!
-
Thank you TBA and Flip.
The jak seed was from a local farmers market, LNB Grovestand are the sellers and perhaps the growers. I recall the fruit being crunchy and in b/w yellow and orange in color. Had some latex, not sure what is normal as I don't know jack about jakfruit. Recall it being delicious with the Juicy Fruit gum flavor.
-
Thanks, roblack, I myself don't always know what variety of fruit I'm eating, but certainly know what I like, ha! What's its growth habit been like? How tall is it? Thanks!
-
The tree is about 10 feet +, pretty upright in its habit. Not too bushy.
-
The tree is about 10 feet +, pretty upright in its habit. Not too bushy.
Normal seedling growth habit. You may want to top it.
As to variety, if YOU like it, that is most important. Based on where the fruit came from, its a good chance it was a random seedling. The "juicyfruit" flavor is just a classic jackfruit flavor. Better selections will be more complex and/or with a different profile and no latex.
-
Much appreciated Rob. At what height would you top?
Thinking between 7 and 8 feet, and trimming side branches, leaving a collar. Not sure if that's a good idea.
Have tried grafting other varieties onto it, with no luck. Going to try again.
My oldest daughter loved the taste, and agree with her. I recall it having complexity beyond Juicy Fruit, but noticed that for sure.
Roasted some seeds too. They were delicious. I'm skilled at over-seasoning stuff, so not sure how good they are plain. Roasted garlic to potato texture, with a nuttiness that made me want to prepare them again. Such a cool fruit.
Can't say how much variety they have in jaks, but the market vendors make a mean jakfruit smoothie, often mixed in multi levels with kale, sapodilla, sorrel, and other stuff. Miss those rainbow and Jamaican flag smoothies.

So those are edible? I had always been under the impression mushrooms growing out of wood were likely poisonous. I have an old, diseased water oak that has fungus sprouting out in places that looks very similar to what's in your photo.

Rob I just want to let you know they are still selling those every weekend at 137 Ave and 136 St. I buy them for my daughter so she will eat Kale and she loves them. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on myself but my getting my child to eat kale and beets and other local tropical fruit is worth every penny!

Hi Roblack,
You have quite a collection and I really appreciate seeing all the individual plants, but am quite curious as to how it looks as a landscape. Any chance you can make a video walking thru your landscape? It would give me more of an idea as to how to integrate more trees with tighter proximity as I feel I am running out of room. I only have about 1/3 acre house pool etc. have some shade issues to contend with also. I look forward to viewing the "whole picture".
TIA

about the groups of fives , isnt the center plant unnecessary , if u really want to open it up for air and light in the center?? By the video ,the center plants always look way smaller ,compared to the others ...
-
OK here is your video
https://youtu.be/ECcZivpYaws
i love it - im in homestead, we should compare notes :)
-
Yes you are correct I probably should have not planted the center trees but then again I cut all of them down to 6-7 feet at the end of each season so light and air does flow. If you noticed almost all my trees start branching from 3-4 feet up so if I prune the tops to 6-7 ft then there is only 3-4 ft of foliage. Also the whole project is a giant exciting experiment so I’ll learn as time goes by and things grow. There’s lots of questions for example after ? Number of years will the trunks start crushing each other? Or should I prune on an angle on top with the side of the sun the low side and the backside higher up or should I let the center trees be a bit taller than the other trees. I do intend to let lateral branches extend out to open spaces but never so the grass cutters get blocked. But I went mango planting crazy and I don’t feel guilty or dumb. It’s just a hobby and I don’t sell fruit. It’s just fun. And I do want all the experiments to succeed. A fun challenge.
-
Thank you PJ. A work in progress, and much trial and error. Have been impressed with how well many plants do with limited light and space. Of course, they don't reach their potential, but that's not what I'm striving for.
The yard is largely lawn, and most of the trees are along the fence lines and congregated in a few patches.
I will make a video sometime in the future. Working on a few projects, and want to clean up a bit and get things feeling more right.
As time goes on, will switch out some stuff, add more flowers, graft more, and add privacy. Neighbor just whacked a huge row of Surinam cherry trees, and I can see too much.

After 3 - 4 years +, I can't recall for sure, passiflora laurifolia has finally set fruit. I only have one mature plant.
Just started 11 seedlings to pollinate, but they are all under 12 inches.
Must have been the pollen from p. nitida that I tried again to hand pollinate (had failed several times). Will try again to see if they are truly compatible. Either way, cannot wait to try this fruit!
-
I would not advise you to eat these mushrooms because it is better not to eat them than to take and die from the poison contained in them. Just recently, when we were resting at the dacha, namely, installing protection against leaves on the pool by type click here (https://poolcareschool.com/pool-cover-pump/), we saw a small cluster of mushrooms. My brother seems to understand mushrooms and said that they are edible, but because I really like to throw a tantrum, I did not allow them to eat, and how a week later we found out that they were poisonous mushrooms that are very similar to ordinary ones. Therefore, even if you are 100% sure that they are edible, do not eat them in any case. Suddenly you made a mistake and it may cost you your life.
I used to eat wild mushrooms that looked OK to me. That were white with no red dangerous warnings. That looked like supermarket mushrooms. I was helping out in an extensive vegetable garden about 1989. I saw some very innocent looking mushrooms so ate a few.
After 5 hours I was vomiting and shitting out as much as possible. So what mushrooms I had eaten were semi-poisonous I guess. These mushrooms put me on a mild and enjoyable trip/ Right after the puking.
-
These reishi mushrooms were fine. Made tea of them, and dried some. Did a bit of research, but would've been even better to do a spore print and reference. Started with a sip of mild tea. Felt fine. Drank a little more, felt finer. Didn't get too crazy though. I'm convinced these are a lighter colored reishi. In the neighborhood, have seen some growing high up in a tree that has a large dead branch.
I agree, it is risky eating wild mushrooms. Sux to be wrong.
Let's go foraging Zands! There's gotta be better pickings out there
-
Happy to report passiflora nitida is finally fruiting as well. Both vines have been growing for years, hand pollinated, with no fruit. Only 1 plant of each. Seems they are compatible, or something else is finally pollinating them.

Now I'm not sure about "passiflora nitida"
Anyone with any insight and help identifying these, please share your thoughts...
These 2 pics are of the same flower, which was sold to me as passiflora nitida about 5 years ago.

(https://i.postimg.cc/8F1vXwKL/passnitida2-52021.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/8F1vXwKL)
These 2 pics are of the same flower from a passiflora laurifolia plant that I grew from seeds.

(https://i.postimg.cc/NLyHnK4C/passlaurifolia252021.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/NLyHnK4C)
I am starting to think neither of these plants is p. nitida, and perhaps they both are p. laurifolia. There are some differences between the flowers and foliage, but still think its the same thing. Pics of p. nitida flowers show it with wavy filaments, which neither of my plant's flowers appear to exhibit.
Both the plant and the seeds were obtained around the same time, from Top Tropicals.
-
Is anyone growing p.laurifolia and/or p. nitida?

Thanks TGT!
Rollinia tree was planted January 2016, and was a nice sized 5+ gallon tree at the time.
I've had to majorly top it, and needs another cutting now. About 9 - 10 feet now, with some taller stalks shooting up here and there. Nice umbrella like canopy has developed. Shady and fruity up underneath.

Hey Brad. How's it going in the Oasis?
Sad to share that I lost one of the Biqi. Had repotted meticulously into a rootsaver pot, and when I went to pick it up, the bottom fell out. Carefully put it all back together, and everything seemed okay for a few weeks. Then it died. Not sure what else could've happened.

Hey Slopat.
Yes, Sichuan pepper is numbing, and does not really have much heat to it, maybe a little. I eat a sichuan chili sauce that is really good. Would love to experiment with it more.
I have 2 varieties. Will have to look up their scientific names. The one pictured grew through the pot and into the ground. Going to cut the pot away and build up a mound around the root ball and leave it be.
I'm not sure about flowers and fruits. Yet to see any. This is not scientific, but looks to me like its going to do something soon.
-
Found some more info:
I have Hua Jiao Shu sichuan pepper and Zanthoxylum Simulans. Z. Simulans is the one pictured is bigger than the other. Think they are different species.
One of the sellers said they can fruit within 2 to 3 years. Received both of these 2 years ago, November.

Check out this passiflora laurifolia vine growing on pongam tree. Was sold me to as p. nitida about 6 years ago, but is obviously laurifolia (flowers and fruits confirmed). The tree is 40 feet tall, and the vine grows all over it. Unfortunately, iguanas roost high up in the tree, and consume the flowers. I only get fruits from another vine.

(https://i.postimg.cc/MnmKq4t8/temp-Imagewi7564.avif) (https://postimg.cc/MnmKq4t8)
Tree was seed grown from Farmers Market fruit that was crunchy and sweet, at least 5 years old, or more.
-
Pic 1 might be a fruit. The texture is correct with the tiny raised bumps. The little light colored bits protruding from the green bumps are the stigma. Males are smoother. The overall shape is usually fatter at the collar.
Pic 2 is too blurry to tell.
Sometimes flowers are both male and female but I have never seen these mature into anything edible. Once, I found a flower nearly half and half, female by the stem. I attempted a reassignment surgery, removing the male half, but the flower still rotted like the males do.

Thx Brandon, you have doubled my hope! =)
