Must have mango cultivars from Merritt Island FL
« on: February 24, 2013, 03:00:29 AM »
anyone growing this cultivar from merritt island?

the fruits reminded me of Carrie, but more fibrous, with a strong strawberry jam/Carrie flavor.

it's one of my favorites.  I suppose I'd like to grow one.

MangoMan2 posted these in another thread.

Tyler mango tree just east of the fruit stand. EXCELENT mango!

Tyler mango, fully ripe.

I am not growing it either.....but from the accounts of Adam and Ed Self and others, I may have to start a quest to get one going at my house. I wonder how its productivity and disease resistance is.

I bought a Tyler last summer at Ensey's and it was quite good but I thought more of Dot and Zill that day. Dot was very good. Of course it could have been just that particular day.

Adam,

I have some seedings growing at the house. Come and see me this spring and get one.
My little seedling still hanging in there with this last cold snap?

Joe.

I like Rutledge, would plant a tree.  I can't remember what Carrie Apple or Tyler tasted like.  Royal Purple tastes insipid to me.

Osteen was the best Merritt Island mango I had last year.

That Osteen I got from you is doing well, after the bare rooting experience I put it through. One of the few I did get to try before buying, I like the Osteen, and is the variety being used commercially in Spain for export market in UK etc.

Kind of weird that more people in Europe are familiar with a mango variety from Fla, than Floridians.

Osteen was good last year.
It's one of the the three names I checked on Ensey's list as being notably good in case of a return visit this year. A nice sized pink fruit as I recall.

The fruit gets some beautiful color to it.

Overall it seems to have great commercial properties. I can see why they're fond of it over the pond.

Here in south Florida it probably gets too much anthracnose, especially once you get away from the coast.

also one called orange delight, or delicious or something.

I remember they were very nice, but have to be eaten dead ripe.

It wasn't a large fruit, but it was nice...

I never got to taste banana...I heard they're fibrous but very nice...

purple turp was very nice and easy to sell...

I enjoyed Orange Delicious too. You're right its better 'dead ripe'.

Thanks for confirming this Squam

Also...what about sunset?

they reminded me of grapefruit/mango flavor...very tasty...but somewhat variable.  Some fruits were huge! some were small.

It was also an easy sale...and a must have...if you like grapefruit flavor.

J.D. Ensey was also very good,  large fiberless with a good mild taste.  Orange Delicious and Tyler both had fiber with sweet flavor.  Can't wait to sample these M.I. fruit again this year.

I haven't had Sunset in years but I remember it being quite good. And fortunately, it managed to escape Merritt Island! There is a tree at the fruit and spice park. Not to be confused with the Frank Adam's Sunset grown by Fairchild (and possible parent of Maha Chanok)

The Sunset mangos are very overpowering; coconut/pina colada taste. After 1 I was good on not wanting to many more. The Royal Purples are good if picked at the correct time; taste just like a Concord grape. But they have a tendency to ferment. The Osteens were very good last year...the best I've ever had them I think.
They're like the Varmint-Cong...

Here is an old photo I took of the M.I. variety.  Use CNTRL + to make the photo larger if you can't read the text.

I remember there weren't enough Austin fruits last year!

I reluctantly bought about 8 fruits the first time around...

by the time i realized they are so delicious, I couldn't get any more!!!

Don't they taste somewhat like coconut? or is than another mango I'm thinking of?
