I haven't personally, but have heard that Cheese Pine is supposedly excellent.

Most of the guys here have only had the Agristarts varieties-  Sugarloaf, White Jade, etc.

Maybe Oscar has had it.  He has some rare pineapples.

Hi thanks for the info.... i haven't got to try cheese pine as of yet but i did get lucky to find a guy who has been growing many different variety of pineapples and one of them was Cheese pine and he sent me a few slips to grow my self but still a long ways to go before i will get to try one out.... the guy i got them from got most of his from the USDA back when they were offering free samples of germplasm to grow from but they don't offer samples anymore not sure why.... but i just wondered if others have heard of cheese pine pineapple too and what they thought of it.... i grow many different variety of pineapple myself i listed below.... some of the harder to get ones that i have still have a ways to go before there ready to fruit and send up Pups

Yeah.  I've seen some of your posts on GW.  Which ones have you fruited?  Didn't you have a red Spanish fruit?

Yeah my red spanish already fruited i got 6 offsets from the one plant now I'm waiting for them to flower again maybe around winter time not sure. few of my others have already flowered and should be ready by august sometime.... the only one's that haven't flowered already are (Monte Lirio) (Kaua'i Sugarloaf) (Sweet Stripes) ( Both queen pineapple) and (Cheese pine) still have along ways to go before flowering but i cant wait...

the red spanish grow pretty fast growing from slips 1 year of plant growth to being flowed and than fruit ready in 6 months the spines on the leaves are nasty and will cut the crap out of you and they break off into the skin best to wear gloves when messing with them lol

Here is a post I made a few years ago on Gardenweb where the Cheese pine pineapple was discussed. http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2191339/my-new-pineapples (http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2191339/my-new-pineapples)

DGHays passed away relatively soon after that post and I was never able to get the cheese pine from him but I did get a Royal Hawaiian from him I think though.

edit: I just read through the entire post and I see you posted in the thread last year.

Here's what the USDA has to say about Cheese Pine Pineapple

A specimen known as Cheese Pine—collected in Guatemala in 1935—may be sweeter and richer in vitamin C than any other pineapple in the collection. And Pseudananas sagenarius, brought from the Rio Negro region of Argentina in 1938, always gets a second glance. Not a true pineapple, but a member of the same plant family nonetheless, P. sagenarius boasts a botanical quirk: The sharp, thornlike spines along its leaves arch away from the leaf tip instead of towards it. It’s an oddity that some experts are quick to notice.

Congratulations, I’m very interested in what it tastes like. Hopefully it will be sweet enough to balance the high vitamin C.
