PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
In 1016 I went to a local nursery who told me they had jaboticaba trees. After they searched for over a week, those small trees were found hidden among the crepe myrtle trees, and I came home with a 3 foot tall sabara.  Since there was no label on it, I turned to the Plinia Prince Adam to identify it for me and began my educational journey into these truly amazing fruit trees and settled in collecting other varieties that will reportedly begin fruiting long before the "wolf".
After 6 winters of being wheeled in its 30 gallon pot in and out of the garage, the long awaited discovery -  buds are forming in small clusters along the trunk of the now over 6 ft. tall tree !!!  These pictures don't do it justice but here are just a couple of the long awaited buds, hoping fruit will set and I will finally get to taste what y'all have been raving about ....

My pitomba harvest has begun! About 2 months from flower to fruit and they are so yummy! Once they start to turn color, they ripen within days

Tropical Fruit Discussion / WTB Capulin Cherry - Prunus Salicifolia tree

I recently saw a post in the Texas Rare Fruit Growers group and checks all my boxes for desirable.
The capulin cherry Prunus Salicifolia is a hardy, early to fruit tree. It is a hardwood that can grow quite tall. These true tropical cherry trees are unique to their species as they are extremely heat tolerant. In addition, they are evergreen to at least 19F with no limb damage.

I also read that the seeds can take as long as 2 years to germinate, so I am looking for air-layered young trees from the sweet variety from a seller willing to ship.

If you or anyone you know can help, I would truly appreciate it, as I am still trying to re-establish my front yard fruit orchard after losing over a dozen trees in last year's SnowPocalypse.

I am curious to know if any of you grow the Sweet Tamarind Tree - Tamarindus indica?

Did you grow from seed, or buy a fruiting tree or something in between.  How long till producing and how tall now?

I have read that mature trees can tolerate 26 deg F, can handle drought and heat to 113 deg F. And they can live over 200 years.  This seems like a good one to grow for me, and I love the taste of the fruit!
Your thoughts will be appreciated.

I am very interested in growing the Inga Congesta. The flowers are beautiful and it is native to the Atlantic Coast of Brazil.

It can be grown in a pot and will fruit while still small, which makes me think I can move it in the winter to protect against the occasional cold nite of Houston winter.

If anyone has this cultivar fruiting, I would love to see pictures and hopefully buy some fruit/seeds for a taste test.  Even if it has an inferior flavor, I could grow it as root stock and graft the feuillei onto it.

Hi Fellow Gardeners,

I am looking for Cinnamomum zeylanicum, true cinnamon seedlings, or seeds. Can anyone tell me how long seeds are viable and the best method for getting them off to a healthy start.

I live on the gulf coast of Texas, and know I will have to protect if we get a tough winter, but any insight on cold tolerance would be appreciated.

Hello All,

I realize it is time to get back to "school" and learn how to graft.
 I have a roselle hibiscus that is almost ready for post harvest clean up and will be cut up for the compost bin anyway and will be perfect for this purpose. Searching now for the best beginner knife ... any suggestions ?

More additions for my edible landscape - the Java Plum or Jambolan Plum - the Syzigium Cuminii.

This week I scored heavily !!  I obtained 3 young seedlings for the price of the shipping. Then had a conversation with another fruit grower who had a 2 year old plant that I was able to buy super cheap. . . so now I have 4 !!!
I intend to keep them in pots so I can control the size and hopefully get them fruiting and be able to protect them from freezing in the winter.



Who Else is growing these ?  any tips ?

Thought we should start a new thread so Luis can keep us posted on Laura the monster heading my way.

The wind is picking up and a few sprinkles of rain already.  The system is almost as wide as the entire Gulf of Mexico

All my seedlings are inside and the trees are all as protected as can be
... I am storm ready!!!!

I hope to defeat Mother Nature ....
Hurricane Marco is headed directly at me and I finally have starfruit on my trees. They are so fragile, I am pretty sure they will fall at the first gust of wind and they are soooo young, I think the harvest will be a total forfeit.

The forecast is for only a category 1 storm, so I am not worried for my home or family, just the garden.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Muntingia Calabura ... My Strawberry Tree trunk is splitting

We had a pretty good storm about 2 months ago and the Strawberry Tree trunk cracked. So we used parafilm and taped it up. It is continuing to grow, flowering and bearing fruit.  There is a new branch coming from below the damage that already has a young fruit on it.

Now I am noticing additional bark that has split on the other branches.

There are 2 suckers beside the main trunk that are developing. Don't think I can cut them away without doing damage to the mother tree.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what advise can you give me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana Harvest Question

We have a large stand of finger bananas that are 15-20 feet tall. We were told we were buying Ice Cream banana, but now I am thinking it is really Nam Wa. It doesn't really matter because they are delicious !!

We have a bunch of bananas with about 10 hands with 12-16 bananas in each hand. Last year we could not eat them all and gave away loads to friends and co-workers and still had some go to waste.

So this year we don't want to cut the whole bunch down at once,  and we need your advise.

Can we pull just a hand or 2 at a time to ripen and extend the harvest ?

if so, should we clip from the top or the bottom of the bunch ?

Should we cut off the blossom or leave it ?

In the past, we have cut down the tree that bore fruit and chopped it into pieces to fertilize the rest of the stand. So every time they bear fruit, we have cut that tree down. This year we need to cut away some pups as there is very little space in that corner. . . I love abundance.

I have a grumichama that i originally had in a large pot for at least 8 yrs. and planted in ground 3 yrs ago. It is healthy, putting on new growth continuously. It has never flowered ?!?!

Am hoping 1 of you Eugenia gurus can suggest how to force some fruit.

Also want to do some pruning, but thought it would be smart to try air-layering some new trees first.

Any advise appreciated. Happy Gardening !

Got this Strawberry Tree 1 year ago, kept in a pot till 5 weeks ago when we planted it in the ground. It has grown almost 2 ft this year and it has been fruiting since March. New flowers green fruit and ripe fruit everyday now.

This tree is fast growing and prolific and the fruit is YUMMY !!
I highly recommend it !!!

Research shows it can handle below freezing temps for the rare times it dips below 33F up against the house on the south side, it could survive without me panicking, watering, covering etc.

It seems like a worthy addition to a fruit salad and would love input on your opinion of flavor, texture etc.

Should I grow this from seed or would a grafted tree be better?

If seed, I would love to buy some, so if you have some for sale, please contact me.
