Ripe figs in Germany in May

Hi,
due to the mild winter now we have a lot of out of season fruit here in zone 7-8 in Germany. But what blew my mind were the ( not very good) ripe figs on two trees in mid May.

Here the fig season does not start before August in normal years.

Interesting! Does the variety have anything to do with it? Do you know the name of this one? Thanks for sharing.

Hard to say. Could have been a Pfälzer Fruchtfeige, Bananenfeige or Brown turkey. Fruit were not too well developed or sweet. Both trees with fruit grow at a south facing wall. All other trees i checked have either only big unripe fruit or a few "ripe" but abortive fruit.

The sun/heat is important for flavor to develop. There are figs that have
two crops a year if grown in warmer areas. The second crop always tastes
better. You might consider removing the first crop to make way for the good
summer crop?

Here in Germany the first summer crop is bigger and tastes better. Then, starting in October there is a second crop. By end November the new fruit are of inferior quality, just like those early fruit i discovered.

Some here. I think it's brown turkey, they make early fruits, especially under heat. other figs don't behave like this.

In areas with short growing seasons, it's best to focus on the breba crops. They'll get enough sun to ripen and develop a lot of sugars while the main crop, pushing into the late Fall/Winter months will not get enough sun to ripen properly.

Yes, most people around here do not harvest the late figs. Many do not even know they are edible, even the good ones.
