Yay!! Pickering...finally found one!!
« on: May 17, 2012, 05:01:52 PM »
I lost the last one I bought to root rot sadly  :( and I've been looking and calling around for several weeks now. Found a NICE Healthy Pickering...finally after calling about 20+ different nurseries in my area (central and west coast FL). Man, this variety is SO hard to find here in my area unlike the East and South Coast where they are available in so many nurseries!!

This time I decided to plant it in the ground close to the south wall appx. 6-7 ft from the wall and will have to protect it during the freezes!! Wish me luck!!

Nancy,

I'm so glad you were finally able to find a Pickering. You will be very happy with this mango. You also planted the tree in just the right place also. Just buy one of those clamp-on lamps from Home depot and a 100watt bulb and a frost blanket and you should be fine when it gets cold.

Joe.

Thanks guys/gals!!...appreciate the well wishes, I will need it for the winter,lol...

I'm so Happy I finally found it..( Jene's Tropicals in St. Pete) Actually a Mother's Day gift so Hubby didn't mind the 4 hour drive (well didn't mind as much, Ha!).

Mangoman, will definitely build a little shelter and get some lights for it, thanks! Hopefully, planting it close to the house will help.

Good luck with it!

Here is mine currently with the fruit.  I haven't tasted the fruit yet, but the tree looks like it will be productive.

Nancy:
If anyone deserves a trailer load of mangoes from your tree, it is you. You are always so nice and complimentary about everyone's efforts. I'm sure everyone of the forum is rooting (no pun) for you.
The tree and your garden both look beautiful.

Wicked wonderful for you Puggles!!!!!!!!!!

and TOTALLY love the fact you've planted this dwarf outside near a south wall....it should be easy to
cover during the chill ..... this one is gonna do so well for you...I can just feel it....

if anyone deserves the best 5 gallon (or is it 3?) mango purchase of 2012,
it is YOU!!!!!!!!

Thanks Sleepdoc, I hope so too!!

Appreciate it FlDave...that's a good looking Pickering tree you have there as well. You will love them, they're yummy!!

Thanks lycheeluva...that was kind of you to say  ;D

Absolutely Enduser...There's always "pugging" in the future,lol...but not till next year after I see how it does with its first winter. I'm actually not going to have to pug this one much...it shaped nicely and its low to the ground already. Plus I'll have to wait and see if the freeze will "pug" it for me  :(

Hey MangoFang...actually its a 7 Gallon...VERY nice healthy root system...Not rootbound but definitely filled out the pot. Nice new growths emerging already!

Congrats Nancy, that a very healthy looking tree. Placing your tree close to the wall should help it survive the winters. Good luck!

Hi Marin...Congrats on a second round of blooms on your Pickering, that's so great! Please post some pictures, would love to see it. This tree is quickly becoming one of my most favorite mango trees for many reason...there's always so much going on with this variety and its ALL good!

Thanks JF!! I'm hoping since its a small compact grower it should do okay a little close to the wall.

Your peripatetic & precocious newly planted pretty Pickering producing and parenting a profusion of young leaves and branches, is just showing off. Next spring it will pollinate and put forth one hundred pinky-nail size fruitlings to provide more smiles  :) :) 8) ....... it then starts self thinning

Thanks Natalie...No I didn't head it, I didn't think this particular one needed it. It already had a pretty nice shape so I just let it do its own thing.

Zands, I'm really looking forward to seeing those tiny little baby mangoes next year...assuming I make it without any issues next winter that is!

Appreciate it Steven...

If your Pickering is similar to mine it will put forth many many baby 1/4" size mangoes. More so than my other mango trees. It has no problem getting fruits pollinated.... at least this is what I have had happen. It spends more resources on fruit and less on branch and leaf same as NDM#4 does. My prediction is a nice winter 2012-2013 for your mango trees even though it makes my citrus less sweet
